Apparently I really got on it on there tight as I dented the can with the strap wrench when removing it. Also it seems my flow is backwards.. all the sludge was on the inside and the media was barrel shaped. I guess I'm going to have to hook up some pressure gauges to see what is happening... I assumed the tstat housing would be the higher pressure side...

2 years and 150 hours on the filter. Supertech all makes/models was used. It now has Zerex conventional green in it and new filter.

Looks like it caught a lot, but I would reverse the flow to it. I actually have mine in between the 2 heater hoses, in summer I close a ball valve to push more coolant through it, and because I have an older diesel, running green w/SCAs, that was neglected when I bought it, there is a TON of sandy silicate in it when I change it.

Did you turn that combo ADBV/bypass valve around? ... it looks to be installed backwards.

Also, if the flow was actually going backwards through the filter, then the flow would have been blocked by the ADBV closing on the base plate. Something weird going on with this filter.

The media looks as if it's been pushed outwards. As if it ballooned out. Who installed the filter mount? Possibly plumbed in reverse?

Why would a coolant filter have an ADBV anyway? Or why a bypass valve, as generally they are set up in a bypass loop, and therefore plugging would not affect main coolant flow? Are we sure that's what the black thing is?

That's not an ADBV, my Luberfiner filter actually has a metal orifice in the path of the tube. Your flow is definitely backwards, and your crud capacity will increase when you reverse it. Your filter a "blank", as in no SCAs?

How can it restrict when the OD in it is lager than the OD on the base plate center hole?

The restrictor has a small hole in it to slow down the flow, supposed to be the outlet side. Normally a coolant filter acts as a bypass filter, only filtering a small portion of the coolant flow. Curious what he's running it on, that's quite a bit of silicate in it.

I disposed of the old filter, so instead I took a pic of a new one. It is a plastic restricter that fits kinda like a ADBV, but does not block the inlet holes...

I would use test strips to monitor your SCA levels, some of that stuff in your center tube looked funky to me, like maybe you had coolant gelling from excess SCA levels. I use the Penray ones, but the NAPA ones work well too. Do a search on DCA-2 & DCA-4 SCAs, you'll see how much fun old-style diesel coolant maintenance can be.

Why not use a fleet diesel specific coolant? As for the filter sticking like that, i have heard lubing the oring with oil will prevent that.

I was looking mainly for particle filtration since this engine has seen little to no coolant maintenance. And even after being flush would turn the coolant brown in a few weeks.

I chose to use original green coolant partially to avoid any compatibility issues (though I doubt there would be any). But mainly because I can't find a blank or non additive filter in the shorter size (space limitations)... they all have DCA.
