Measure the force required to make it start to open and the force it takes to keep it wide open. Then find the area of the valve surface. Using those two measurements, you can calculate the PSI required on the valve surface to open it like you did when measuring the force required.

I like the idea for filter autopsies.

That would work for dome end bypass but what about the combo valves and the one Motorcraft uses.

When I posed the question, I was thinking differential pressure gauge on the vehicle. So you would know if the filter was in bypass or not.

Thanks

No, you couldn't really do the test I described on a combo valve of a base end bypass valve like WIX or Motorcraft uses.

You could use an accurate differential pressure gauge with high resolution across the oil filter to see when the bypass valve opened. I think Jim Allen (old member here) did exactly that. When the delta-P curve slope changed is when the bypass valve started to open.

Technically Purolator is still an American brand. I think it's possible the new reds are going to tear just like the old ones, looking at the wide space, in the same place. Since they never recognized the issue, seems a fair assumption until well proven otherwise. But how many filter cutters are going to use the red ones with so many other choices? Not that many.

To use an idiom, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

'To be fair', only with use will it be known if Mann&Hummel has made the correction/improvements needed to correct the tear issues seen under their Puro US ownership watch. But at least M&H is now putting their name on the can, so they are now taking their ownership public to the customer.

With exception of can color, looks fairly similar to the previous. 'Perhaps' the media has been changed? Louvered centertube now used, but was being phased in before new red can. Bypass design is the same as previous applications which used the coil spring design. Other than that, not much to see in virgin red.

As an aside, comments are an entertaining read and predictable depending on commenter. No surprise.

Thanks for pics.
