I've had this filter sitting around for about six months. With all the media issues I decided to cut this open today. As you can see in the pics, the media tore away from the glue or tore at the glue seam (it's hard to tell).

Background, this filter was ran for 5,000 miles on my 4.0L V6 in my 2010 Nissan Frontier with Pennzoil Conventional 5w30.

Enough typing, on to the pics.

Opposite side of the tear. It looks like it's getting ready to come loose here too!

I know this is kind of old news, but just wanted to post some pics. It's torn in the same place I've seen the others torn.

Same failure mode as seen in all other Purolator media tear photos. The pleat has been pushed over due to oil flow, and the media tore at the root of the pleat where it's glued - because it can't bend at the root. The glue is fine ... the media failed and tore from the stress on the pleat.

What's the manufacturing date code stamped on the can?

Another one, wow. At 5k on this one, starting to watch the miles now on these there have been so many. They need to do something fast.

As always, thanks for cutting and posting.

There just no way any Purolator will be going on my vehicle any time soon. They need to get there act together, people please KEEP posting your pics of these things so they might get a clue.

I just sent an email to Purolator with these pics.... We'll see what they say, if anything. I even offered to send them the cut open filter.

Chalk up another one... I have a P1 ready to go for my truck later this month, and I almost do wanna run it just to cut it open when I'm done and see for myself. But on the other hand I'm thinking my engine would rather have a Fram TG.

Haven't seen any reports of media tears in the Bosch line. Maybe people just aren't cutting many open, or maybe the media is different and less prone to tearing, or maybe the pleat spacing is tighter. Many factors could be in play here.

Wow! I try to not to get too worked up on things like this but even I am getting a little concerned. I've got quite a few P1s and Classics waiting to be used. I just dissected two new filters (L14610 and PL14610) and posted them over the weekend. I felt good at what I found at the time. I have my receipts for the filters so returning them aren't out of the question. I'll be cutting open a used PL14610 and a used PL20195 in the next few weeks and I'll post what I find, or don't find, and this will be the determining factor for me going forward.

Purolator did get back in touch with me. They are sending me a "Filter Recovery Kit" with prepaid next day air return shipping. I'm glad to see that they didn't just blow me off. It looks like they are trying to find out what's going on.

Has anyone else with torn media sent their filters in to Purolator?

Just an FYI on the age of this filter. It would have been bought about 9 or 10 months ago. It normally takes me about 3 months to run 5,000 miles and it has sat on my oil shelf in the garage for about 6 months.

What is the date code number printed on the can?
