Most likely..

Brand loyalty is a funny thing...but market research is more important

If the filter was not old stock from Rock Auto, the rust problem likely is due to cheap foreign steel. I've seen premature rusting in fasteners and pressed steel lately.

A serious manufacturer cannot make products like that in any country. Either it is not a serious manufacturer any more or this filter is counterfeit.

I read on here a year or so ago that fake Mahle items were coming out of China. Anybody remember the details?

...and the clever devils even labeled them as being of Mexican origin?
Ya think there might be fake VW cars coming out of China as well?

Of course the counterfeiters will mark them as exact as possible. I don't think you will see a marking that says "Counterfeited in China" on the package.

Guess I should've used a smiley.
I though that the fake VW line would have clued any reader.
My point was that the Mahle in question wasn't a fake at all.
It was what the company felt we should accept.
If I'm wrong, then surely somebody from Mahle will have found this thread through one of the many internet name monitoring services, one of which they must use, since every commercial entity does, and we'll be hearing from them shortly.
If not, the filter the OP cut open was the real deal and represents a good reason not to buy Mahle oil filters.

Fwiw, that's how I read it, and was going to put a 'Sarcasm' sign in the next post, but decided not to. I too would think if it was counterfeit, which I highly doubt, they would go all the way put made in Austria on the box and can. Why not.

Difficult for some to accept that even a respected name like Mahle can manufacture filters in countries other than Austria. But, as the link shows they have several locations in Mexico. http://www.us.mahle.com/MAHLE_North_America/en/MAHLE-Group/Locations/NA Select Mexico.

And 'if' it was "counterfeit" that would mean RA is selling knock off filters, not something they would take lightly as their reputation is on the line too.

^^^ Some vendors don't even know they are selling counterfeit products. I've heard it happens on Amazon from time to time.

I got his point and I agree the poster to whom I responded. I don't believe it's counterfeit. Just a Mahle made in Mexico that apparently doesn't live up to anal retentive aesthetic expectations of some.

Until authoritative proof to the contrary is presented, then it's in the realm of conjecture and speculation.

What's is not speculation is that Mahle has operations in Mexico.

They CLAIM they don't know anyway! Counterfeit oil filters might disintegrate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U53yl4zQFV0
The SEM Scanning Electron Microscope images of the media don't bother me too much, although it means the counterfeits let slightly bigger particles through. What bothers me is that it might fall apart. Also, and I've recently seen this using a K&N for my BMW, a cheaper filter might warp radically, causing the end plates to migrate. Purolator tear-scare is another reason to wonder about the counterfeit stuff.
