I purchased this filter from Rockauto a couple of months ago for my dad's truck... 2000 Chevy S-10 with the 2.2 4cl which calls for a PF47. I figured I'd try out a Mahle for the heck of it. Two days ago I went to check out my stock and figured I'd open it up and check it out for grins. To my surprise the threads were starting to rust.. the other filters I have stored in the same place, including another Mahle filter had no rust or traces of it on the threads. I went ahead and cut it open.. you know, for science. Underside of base plate shows rust as well and notice the pleats. Looks like the truck is getting a PF47 or a Fram TG. This filter was made in Mexico not Austria.

All that rusting going on isn't good. Don't like the super wide pleat spacing (near the seam?).

Indeed the pleat spacing is not ideal. The first bunch of pleats are so close together that if it was even at every pleat that gap would be much smaller.

It's not wasted, plenty of us appreciate the random sampling, you never know what you're going to find.

Just because Purolator's tear with wide pleat spacing doesn't mean that the MAHLE will tear from a wide pleat spacing. I would be more interested in knowing if this is normal for this model number.

I don't like the extra wide pleat spacing or the thinness of the pleats either.

Thanks for the pictures Bud_One.

I think the difference between the one's you've cut open - Texan, is that those were made in Austria, this one I cut up was from Mexico. I have another one for my Honda that I "will" be using on my next oil change and it is made in Austria.

You guys are most welcome.

I'm not racist, but, what the heck is it with Mexicans? The inside of that filter looks so cheap and nasty - Austrian Mahle's are built like Rolls Royce!

It's not just filters either, VWs outta Germany are solid and reliable - as soon as production moved to Mexico the fit/finish went down the pan!

But tequila and nachos kinda make up for it

Mexicans make the best soda.

Barrilitos tropical fruit punch flavor is da bomb.

Another good one is Jarritos in the tangerine flavor.

If you looked at a filter manufactured by Mahle, you would see perfection.

The pictures posted by the OP are (I suspect) pictures of a filter made in Mexico, under license, probably by the cheapest bidder. Mahle only manufacture in Austria, what we see in this post is a rebranding exercise.

I'm seeing the same trend with Mann+Hummel/Purolator. This continents offerings are inferior to the old country. I pulled apart a new Mann ML1010 for the Rainier application and was disappointed. I did it because of the Purolator issues that others have had. The filter cost $2.48 from RockAutoso it was no big loss.

I still use a Mann in the MINI. German-made and no rust on a cartridge!

I don't see anything wrong with it. Any ferrous material is going to rust in the elements eventually. Put the next one on the vehicle immediately after buying it and you won't have a rust problem.

If I have a stash of filters, I put them in a plastic grocery bag in an interior closet of my house.

I put a Mahle air filter (China IIRC) on my truck, and I was astounded at how well it was made.

As to the comment "what the heck is it with Mexicans", I think that is the wrong question to ask. The correct question is "what the #$% is wrong with multinational corporations, always seeking the lowest cost, without respect to quality or brand." Ethnicity has nothing to do with it.

The pleat spacing in the one area doesn't look ideal. Otoh, in real world use it may have be no factor in it's durability over the course of the oci. To say otherwise would be pure speculation.

As for the rust, could be a Rock Auto storage and/or an age of stock issue.

Also, not sure how this can be said to be a 're-branding exercise' as has been stated. This is a Mahle made filter with the Mahle name on it. No rebranding to it. Mahle also makes some Hyundai/Kia cartridges in Korea, that's not rebranding either.

If one doesn't like the fact that Mahle manufactures filters in places other than Austria, say it. But imo re-branding it's not.

Thanks for the pics.

I would like to see the same filter bought from another parts house and cut open. Rock Auto always seems to buy old stock, private labels, unique production runs, etc. This allows for great prices... But I am always leary of consumables purchased from them.

Quality levels are determined by the manufacturer, not the country of manufacture or the ethnicity of those working in a manufacturing plant.
If Mahle and VAG products made in Mexico are inferior to those from Europe, then that was the decision of Mahle and VAG and has nothing to do with Mexico or Mexicans.
