Here is an orange can that I ran on my 08 Silverado 5.3L on the last interval. I ran 7,816 miles on this Orange can and Synpower 5w30.

I do not have a proper cutter so i used tin snips. Around the top of the media there is a little flattening caused by my snips cutting the circle. the snips also bent the edge of and encap seen in the pictures.

The media was in great shape. The endcaps were also secure. I had a hard time removing them and unrolling the media as the end caps didn't want to bust loose.

A good run for this extra guard IMO. I will use another again.

I refilled with Ultra 10w30 SN and an AC/Delco PF48 from my stash. Im happy with the Extra guard and in my application i believe it can do 10k miles.

Glad there's "extra" in the extra guard.

Thank you for posting, but, no thanks.

Looks pretty decent to me. I'll cut open the filters in my signature when I change them. Currently at 6500 on the silver ToughGuard.

Get the TG on it man

It is designed for 10k miles and it is maybe $2 for it. That's hardly much more money for a bit of insurance. I've used the Extra Guard for that long in the past. But that was on my lady's Sunfire. Really shouldn't have done that but didn't think about it at the time. I used them on my car but for 4500 miles.
Actually going to change the oil in her car soon and take off a TG that has 8k on it. So at least got the better filter on it this time

But I have two darn filters that I'm NOT going to put on it. PureOne and a Bosch Premium filter. Both made by Purolator. I wouldn't have gotten the Bosch one if I had known it was made by Purolator. Annoyed to say the least. Ohh well.... Fram Ultra 4967 here we go !
Back on topic..Your truck will get a lot of good miles on it the way you are taking care if it
smile.gif
which is awesome!

Well over it's suggested use rating and it looks very good. I am with the others though, spend the 2 bucks and use the filter that is designed for 10k runs, you'll get higher filtering (99% vs 95%) due to more synthetic in the blend, more media and capacity and a silicone ADBV all for that 2 bucks. Money well spent.

On the other hand you are totally getting your money's worth out of the orange can and many filters (and oil) are under utilized. Good job.

Thanks for cutting and posting.

Good results.

Despite the fear mongering, that it's "rated" for 5k miles, and it has "cardboard" (fiber) caps, the evidence is, well, self-evident. It did a fine job and likely could make that 10k miles.

I bought this filter and oil on sale at a local farm store. I put on an AC/delco pf48 this time around.

I realize the TG is better suited for my intervals, but as shown here it isn't needed. I believe I paid $2.99 for this filter so I am happy.

95% efficiency is good enough and just as efficient as the AC delco filters that are OEM on this vehicle.

I agree there are better filters on the market, however this cut proves to me that I don't NEED a $10-15 oil filter in this application.

I'll run the next interval down to 0% on the OLM and cut open the PF48 and post it as well!

It's not fear mongering pointing out a fact that it says 5k miles on the box. Can it go longer? Obviously yes. Great day in the morning I know I put a lot of them on my lady's car 6k to 7k routinely for over 100k miles. Probably should not have done this routinely though

But for two extra dollars it is a minor extra expense for a filter rated for 10k miles. It's not like spending an extra $10 etc..
The orange can is a good filter for the price point. I've used them almost exclusively until the Ultra came out.
I do agree it is not outside the realm of possibility that it can be used longer than what is clearly stated on the box. But $2 more is not a huge enough increase in price either.

Look again if you think this filter was fine. It's another case of the center tube/end cap being misaligned and the fiber end caps not having the integrity to seal. This filter was bypassing unfiltered oil, likely for the entire time it was installed.

I cant see it. What position are we talking about? (3 o'clock, 9 o'clock etc.)

Between 5 and 8. You can see that the end cap is below the center tube. Contrast that to the area at about 12:30 where you can see the end cap over the center tube, serving as a seal.

You have no idea how the filter was sealed before it was dismantled, therfore you have no way of knowing if it was leaking or not. Removing the pressure of the leaf spring makes things move.

I agree with you Ed and appreciate you pointing it out when that view is shown in an orange can/fiber endcap dissection here. Many times this view is not given so the centertube endcap cover seal area isn't shown. Some times 'in my observation' the exposed centertube end like the one shown corresponds to some distortion/(wave) of a pleat(s) in that same area.

Much as many want now to see the seam area pleat ends of Puros, the view of the centertube endcap seal area is the one I want to see in the orange can dissections.

OP, thanks for the pics.

This is a Purolator made Bosch which would have had no adbv function if installed.

I don't see anything where the tube on the Fram in question isn't sealing. Isn't this the adbv side in question? The adbv on the Fram has a cone shape protrusion which goes into the base cap hole. The center tube is pressed into rubber. No chance of leaking. I wouldn't use either this model Fram or any Purolator with the adbv made like the one I show.
Yesterday I installed a Bosch D+ that I found in my stash, because I noticed it, a D3225, has a similar cone shape adbv going into the center tube, not like the one above. In 5k miles I will cut it open, haven't seen pictures of a D+ cut open that is made like the D3225.
The adbv seal and functional area are very important, but not many people show pictures of the adbv installed and against the baseplate.

The ABV dopes NOT stop oil from draining through the filter element into the engine. I'm beginning to question the whole idea.

I see what you're talking about. Wouldnt the bypass spring have kept that sealed though?

These are similar construction to Honda A02 (yes media and ADBV are not the same - but the basic parts and how they are assembled are).

The ADBV and leaf spring both have lips/flanges on them, I have never cut one apart that did not show at least some indication of a witness mark where these were pressed into the fiber end cap. You can see that witness mark on this filter.

So yes, there is a seal - how complete that seal is I suppose is up for debate.

^this. One end is sitting on the bypass spring, and the other end has the ADBV on it. The media and tube are squeezed between the two. both ends were connected well and while the endcaps aren't 100% even, the seal around the tube was very strong. the glue is especially strong around the center tube on the endcaps. I noticed the endcaps not being completely even, but it certainly wasn't enough to allow a leak situation from what i could tell.
