Cut Open: 17 year old Group 7 V111

Started using some old group 7s I found.

Some people have expressed concerns over using filters only a few years old. and whats the shelf life of filters.

Here is a pic of a new (17 yrs old) v111:

and here is one used in a short oci after a new intake manifold gasket. about 4 days and guessing around 200 miles. with massive fuel dilution due to missing out on 2 cylinders:

It held up well and you would think it was manufactured only a year ago.

I used another G 7 after this oci since we fixed the missing out (new coil pack) and will run for 4000 miles on some Valvoline maxlife synthetic blend 5w30 i got on sale.

Ill post pics after next oci, but I expect the filter to perform the same as a new oil filter.

and these are from a 1995 grand am 3.5L with 90,000 miles.

I was poking around in some of the moldy oldies, https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=6&page=170 this morning. Somebody said the manufacturers pull any stock over 2 years old. As long as the media isn't brittle, I would be tempted to run the rest. Might be interesting to hear how much media they used then. The trend is to less and less. Perhaps better media, but less for sure.

I was looking at some of lubeowner's reports trying to get a handle on the recent reports of failed filters. Near as I can see, all the filters with compromised media were run for unknown periods and looked vastly different from ones run know to be reasonable intervals, very black and pleats every which way. Conditions I have never seen in my filters or ones others here have run known intervals. Filter Guy had posted that badly distorted media results from high moisture in the oil. My conclusion is that if you are careful about coolant and condensation and don't run the filter forever, you have little to worry about.

Yep looks like a purolator base plate and the string is a purolator characteristic too.

filter looks fine to me,i also would be concerned about media brittleness over that period of time.

and if it's a 95 GA it's a 3100 v6.

I had a pair of 20 year old frams, one I used, one I cut open. Media was not brittle, ADBV still flexible. Good to go.

you caught me! yep 3.5 was a typo. Its a 3.1L

and the media feels normal to me.

and they were stored in the garage, not climate controlled.

Who knows I got them at a yard sale a few years back. The 3614s listed applications on the back: toyotas, dodges and yugos up through 1988! And they had Zayre price tags!

It's got a slight brown tint to it compared to the before use photo.
