Cut Motorcraft FL-820S

5000 miles in a 6.8L V10. Uneven pleat spacing near the seam and a bit wavy but no tearing or other issues. I follow the severe service in this vehicle since it weighs around 13,000 pounds.
 
Thanks for the cut and post. It definetely isnt going to win any beauty contests, but it did hold up to the 5k miles of severe service. Are you considering stepping up to a tougher filter?
 
Royal Purple for sure! The RP filters are built like a tank. Or if you wanted to stay in the MC price range you could step up to a "heavy duty" Wix or a Baldwin/Hastings. Several different companies make "Heavy Duty" filters for big truck applications. Typically they have a thicker can and tougher media. Take your pick!

Looks identical to the one I pulled off my dads Raptor. That thing will see WIX and Fram TG/XG's from now on.
 
The Motorcraft filter has the pressure relief valve at the inlet, versus at the dome end with other filters. I would stick with the FL-820S on a Ford motor - it's a great filter.

That is a great feature.
Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, depending upon POV), that feature goes unused most of the time, and therefore it's overall effect on the filter and engine are almost entirely moot.

Most engines don't go into bypass often; very infrequent. This application is a mod-motor Ford 6.8L. The engine is very well established and robust. I suspect he's following warranty and running 5w-20. I would presume he's not flooring the go-pedal to WOT at start-up. Therefore, per Jim Allen's testing, bypass in the filter is essentially a non-event. Therefore the location of the bypass feature within the filter is moot. Even though it may present an "advantage", that benefit is hardly ever capitalized upon.

And real-world macro data from all manner of mod-motor applications suggests that the use of other filter designs (those with BP at the dome end), don't fare any worse in wear rate data.


Nice concept; neat design. But it means nothing over the alternatives in reality.

The Wix replacement for the FL_820s, the Wix 51372/Napa 1372, have a dome end bypass. I used a Napa 1372 for my last oil change on my truck. The start up rattle seemed louder at start up the first few starts, but now it is much quieter and can sit twice as long as it could with the Motorcraft before the start up rattle gets loud. It even sat for a month and did not rattle at start up. I almost pulled it because of the first few starts, but I am glad I didn't. Also it may just be I am so impressed with the quieter starts, but it seems to start easier in the cold also.
 
Really. I was under the impression WIX filters were all base end with the exception of the very (very) small ones and a few select sizes. I guess this is one of them. Lol.

I have the FL820S on my 05 expy 5.4 ( use it only for hauling stuff and sit around most of the time ), I do have the rattle sound if I leave it on without start it, just say a week just sit there , it does have the rattle sound. if I drive it every day, it never have the rattle sound when start up. I will use the Wix 51372/Napa 1372 next time.
 
OP here. This was with a fill of Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20 picked up on clearance at O'Reillys for $2.37/qt. put on another MC and filled with clearance Pennzoil Ultra from Walmart. I will continue to use up some 5w-20 and then use my $1 stash of AZ Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20, Pennzoil Platinum, or Edge. I'm in WI so I see no need to go heavy, although I'm sitting on Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w30 and no vehicle to run it in, except the snowblower.

I still have another MC filter and will use it with confidence. Vehicle has ~25k miles. Might switch to Ultra or Wix...who knows.

Getting 8mpg, I'm really not flooring it at all. Using a SGII, I keep the load below 90% and for better fuel economy don't let the GPH get above 12. Tow/haul mode gets used selectively as I don't like to see it with light load and high revs. Best way to explain is I drive it like a senior drives his Ford chassis motor home.
