Cut and Evaluate My Filters

In a few weeks, I'll be removing 2 oil filters from two of my vehicles. I'd like someone from here that has a good cutter and lots of experience to cut these two oil filters open and evaluate them.

Do I have any takers? I'd ship the filters to you and provide you with compensation for your efforts. I'd like for you to post pictures of these two filters and evaluate what you see on this forum.

There are lots of reasons I'm interested in these two filters. Both filters are Napa Platinums. Both filters have been run for 2 OCI's. One filter saw a healthy slug of LubeGard Biotech during each of the OCI's. The other filter saw a whole can of LM MOS2 during each OCI.

I'm curious to see how these filters look after an extended time in service. I'm wondering if the filter that saw 2 cans of LM MOS2 is plugged up.

Lastly, I'll be sending samples from each car into Blackstone for analysis, along with insolubles and possibly a particle count since these Napa Platinum's have a "sketchy" efficiency rating.
 
I cut mine open with a dremel abrasive cutting wheel - pretty easy - the cutting wheel set in a nice partitioned box was cheaper than buying some spare cutting wheels and a spindle alone.

Well with all the oil analysis to be ordered, its already well over $100, so what's a couple hundred more?

OP, I know you're curious and all, but what will one data point on an engine, oil, additives and filter tell you? With so many variables and one data point, you get 0 useable data for your time, effort and money.

Really? We all know how Honda and Subaru 4 cylinders wear....they don't. I'm hoping a used oil analysis shows typical, very low wear numbers.

I want to see if I have any air filtration issues.

I want to see if I have a HG issue on my Forester.

I want someone to cut open the filters, WITHOUT using a Dremel and contaminating the media with debris, and see if there is excess particles caked in the filter from running moly additives.

I think these are all questions that can be answered with a quality filter cutter (which I don't have) and a couple of used oil analysis.

I'm actually going to run the oil samples myself on the ICP-OES and ICP-MS I run at work. I can do a particle analysis with the MS. Then confirm my numbers when a certified lab's results.

If you're willing to pay someone to cut them open, why not just buy a filter cutter. Then you can do it yourself and still have the cutter for any future cutting if you need to.

why not just ask for even $1000 while you are at it.... unbelievable

I'd be willing to cut them and post pictures. I have a filter cutter.

The "evaluate" I'd have to leave to the peanut gallery... but I will do it in the name of science which is to say free...

i would suggest doing it yourself with tin snips. its what i use and does not contaminate the inside of the filter. use a nail and a hammer to punch a hole first and then tin snip away. usually better to evaluate things firsthand.
then you can photograph it to compare to future filters, cut the media off and look at it with a magnifying glass, feel if the particles are hard or soft, taste it for coolant... anything you want!
