Frowny is a great description for sure. Now that I think on it, that is true. All I will see now is a frowning clown trying to look like Shredder from Teenage mutant ninja turtles.

Cow catcher is a vernacular misnomer. It's properly called a "pilot" and its purpose is to deflect debris that may be littering the track.

The old style 60s through 94 “new Ram” was a classic, solid look. I’d love to have one of those Government issue crew cab dodges from the day after and First Strike movies…
At least I thought they were dodges.
And the older ones are interesting looking too…
Although maybe in a hideous kind of way.
But seriously, the early 90s trucks are handsome. Sure, some of the older GM trucks are hard to best on looks, but these are not bad and hold their own. Give me a Cummins engine and red upholstery!
And then 94 came around and the rest is history. I love my 96 Cummins trucks.

There seems to be a lot of nostalgia from GEN X and millenials for the those early 90’s trucks.
Having driven an 89’ ranger for far too long I’ll have to pass on that trend.
I (workplace unit I manage) received the very last Model D Dodge pickup off the Warren Michigan assembly plant. While I'm not in this picture, I have pictures of me at this factory hoopla accepting the keys and giving a short acceptance speech. I/my unit was chosen to get this truck due to my OCD reputation of taking care of things well. "My" truck on right, new model on left of course.

An 89 ranger is a far cry from a full size.
I have a 98 S-10. Bought new. Love the thing. But it’s a far cry from my 96 rams in terms of comfort and driver isolation (and space).
Nostalgia? Maybe? You didn’t see many back when, and I’d agree with you if it was square body GMs and suburbans and k-blazers…. I think for the dodges, It was just the start of the Cummins years, the two tone colors looked good, and it’s something different from what was made since.

I wouldn’t drive my extended cab long bed 96 CTD daily either. The 2wd is more manageable but still big. I’ll stick to my cars, thanks.
Yet both blow freezing cold ac, are relatively quiet and comfortable, have enough space to sit with good posture, good visibility. And they last.
The "is" looks pretty good...the "was" was the ugly one...somebody at Honda is now paying attention...
Top pic, ugly, bottom pic not bad...
All the SUVs seem to think that they need a silver looking piece of plastic between the tail pipes. Looks Cheap and stupid.

Frankly I think truck styling has always been better, but potentially because it has remained more consistent and conservative.
You posted this picture.....it was what I referring to. I would give a bunch of bucks for a new one of these.
Yeah back in the day they looked similar to a truck, instead of a 4 door car with a little play pen attached at the rear. 
Agreed, I think the Challenger is by far the nicest-looking of the retro muscle cars (Camaro, Mustang, and Challenger).I’m biased, of course, but I think Dodge absolutely nailed retro on the now now discontinued Challenger. Must be why Stellantis killed it.

Ford got it right with the Mustang in ‘05, but then drifted away from retro. Not a fan of the current styling, but at least it continues with a V8.
I also thought Ford did a good job on the retro T-Bird of 20ish years ago.
There was in an ad in Time or Newsweek not long after the new-style Dodge Rams (1994?) were introduced.
They made the point that the "Semi tractor" look had been a big hit, and compared it to the original plan, a refresh of the style shown above.
Typical of me, I preferred the style they had proposed but abandoned, to the "new look" trucks of '94.
