Current ugly trends

I saw my first cybertruck on the road this week. It was solid black. What a strange sight to behold. It literally felt like I was transported to the world of Tron or something like that. Ugly? Maybe. ostentatious? Yes!

The high, blunt front ends on light trucks and SUVs are ugly and unnecessary. The automakers will try to claim those are to help meet pedestrian-impact safety standards, but that's rubbish. The hoods are far more than 100 mm above the hard parts of the engine (which is the Euro standard for a crush zone). These front ends create a huge blind spot just ahead of the truck for the driver.

A secondary problem is that the headlights blind other drivers at night because they are at eye level, since the front end is so high. I drive an older Ranger and regularly get blinded by these newer trucks' low beams.

All of the newer full-sized trucks are just plain ugly and sinister. Some of these stylists must have been using some potent stuff at past Grateful Dead concerts.
Plus, they make service a pain. I generally use a step ladder when doing anything to my Nissan’s engine because it’s so tall. I want to be able to look down on my engine, not look it in the eye…and I’m 5’10”.

Panels over sheetmetal tend to trap moisture and salt against the metal, so they aggravate rust. When chrome panels on lower doors and fenders were the norm in the 1980s, they caused the same rust problem.
That's what happened to my '81 Toyota Celica Lift-back. The top models had a stainless steel strip around the wheel wells. I suppose it protected the paint against stone chips but guess where it rusted. Everywhere under those strips, especially around the screws.

The more basic models didn't have those attractive SS strips. They did fine.

Let's talk about some of today's ugly automotive styling trends. Over sized grills. Grills have gotten way to big on many of today's vehicles, to the point of being hideous looking. Black plastic body panels that go all the way around the bottom of the vehicle. Most, if not all modern SUVs have this and it looks ridiculous. It also turns powdery white over time and has to be treated with some sort of trim restore. Matte paint. To me this looks like primer. Paint should be glossy. And the final, and ugliest of them all...black rims. Regardless of wheel style, or the vehicle they're on, they always make the vehicle uglier. Rims should either be chrome or polished...
I agree with the grill statement. Probably the ugliest grill goes to Toyotas.

The trend is slap a tablet somewhere on dash and give up on smooth design around.

A few makers work around it and it looks nice , others looks like someone went to Best Buy asked to get their iPad mounted to dash.

This styling change started when cars no longer came with chrome bumpers. As far as wheels I like black on some vehicles but not so much on trucks. It seems as if most common sedans, cars, and trucks all look about the same. Cars of the late 50's and 60's had real style and every year looked different. Not so much in today's world but little things like that don't bother me at all. Reliability is more important than looks since so many vehicles look the same anyway.

All of that fake plastic " Chrome " logo and lettering on the tailgate and side panels of my pickup . I removed all of that crap and cleaned off the adhesive residue . It wasn't hard it just took a little time . SO much cleaner look to it .

Yeah, I'm not sure who meth'd up the idea at Toyota for the "Predator" grille:

The press in the day called these grilles cow catchers - like on the old Steam Locomotives from the 19th century.

I have been calling it the Vader Respirator since I first saw it. Now you have taken it full alien organic, lol.
