Long story short, bought a used KIA Sorento, 1 owner always serviced at the dealership we bought it from (also purchased there new).....

This resulted in a long talk with the service maniger. He told me they use a "syn-blend" 5-20 that was more of a conventional oil, its based on what the factory sends them and that is based on whatever contract they land. So it sounds like its different all the time (yearly).

So my question is, does anybody have the iggy on this oil ? What is it ? Who makes it ? Any info at all ?

I am just curious as to what has been run in my KIA since it was new, but whatever it is the OCI was 5-6k mi. Two times she went to 7,500mi which is at the top of factory spec.

What that translates to is, What ever the service manager can order for the cheapest price that meets the manufacturer's specifications. It doesn't come from the Kia factory.

Bullwinkle is right; although the main KIA dealer near me that my oil change friend works for days they use QSED "enhanced durability" in 5w20&5w30

Chances are it is a local Mobil or Shell distributor and it's 5w30. My Toyota dealer uses QS 5w30

The sales guy told me it was Mobil...... but you know how trust worthy they are when trying to make a sale !

I am really up in the air about what to run in this thing....

I want to go with a 0-30 or a 5-30, not enough UOAs around to compare what holds up in this specific engine better or worse though. A few on here that tells us PP shows to be a good choice, I may go with that or try a few with a few UOAs to compare. Mobil AFE is around in 0-30 and is always in stock at WM, never been a Mobil fan though. I run GC in our 4.0 Ford motor but its a PITA to locate anymore and I can only find it in 0-40.....

in my 11 sorento 3.5 i run 5w20 in the winter and 10w30 in the summer (south georgia, winters low 20, summer high 115)

its currently on PEAK 10w30

They probably use whatever bulk oil from whatever local/regional distributor. That's not a bad thing. It's the way the industry works, but there's no way for anyone on this board to know what that dealer used.

I work for a GM dealer and what we use varies and changes over time. For a while, anything getting Dexos 0W20 got it out of individual AC Delco quart bottles. Now that the volume has gone up, it's in a bulk tank, and I don't think it's "AC Delco" branded, but it is 0W20 Dexos. Honestly, I don't even usually look at the brand on the invoice when the oil company comes to fill up the tanks. Even the bulk regular 5W30 is going to be some kind of decent ConocoPhillips product or something though, not some junk with a PQIA warning.

You can't go wrong with PP 5w30

At my KIA dealership our oil is a syn blend from Coastal. We have bulk tanks of 5w-20 and 5w-30. Our full synthetics both 20 and 30 weight are from MOC and are Dexos approved. I guarantee you the Service manager has no clue what oil they use , as that is ordered and filled by the parts department. Honestly I would use whatever 5w-20 oil you want. Only really see oil related problems with the 2.0T and that is mostly owner neglect. KIA does need to spec a syn for that engine. High compression , direct injection and turbo do not do well with a conventional. Id run Pennzoil Platinum in it if it were mine and not lose any sleep over it.

Ok..
let me catch up...
First I was not sure if KIA dealers get oils based on region or if it was a one size fits all corporate spec'd deal.
To say that "nobody" in this thread can say what oil KIA uses, I simply do not agree... It is always worth a shot to ask and see what info is out there, who knows maybe the parts manager from Turner KIA in Harrisburg, PA is a member here LOL ! Its always worth a shot....

I am not concerned with the oil quality (per say) just curious...

The two dealerships by my house all use Total as the "Kia recommended oil". I also thought that was used as factory fill in them as well. I don't know this for sure. I run PP and works great.

People are trying to tell you that KIA dealers do not universally use the same oil.

"The factory" doesn't ship oil to your dealer and it's almost impossible to track down what oil your particular dealer used at specific points in the past.

YES... I got that, with the first post relative to it.

The correct answer to your question would probably be the Service Manager or honest tech at your dealer if they're up front with you.

Hyundai/Kia has a business deal with Quaker State and I've seen mention made of using QS Enhanced Durability ( a syn blend ) at a couple dealerships...so if the parts/service folks told you that, I'd think that's probably correct...but the answer probably lies in what's in the bulk oil vat or what particular oil they get a deal on or promote as part of another program. I don't think there's a mandated, universal standard ( regional or otherwise ) that you seem to be hinting at...
