Current Briggs & Stratton small engines any good?

Your Quantum is a side valve engine, likely with an aluminum bore. I see nothing wrong with aluminum bores in most service. Sure, there are some severe situations where a steel bore would be best, but in most cases, given reasonable maintenance, that aluma-bore engine will outlast the mower deck.

My deck is steel, not rusting at all, but I'm in Oklahoma where rust usually isn't a problem. I'm just searching around because like a poster above said, everytime I go to use and because of its age, I ask myself is this thing ever going to quit??

I'm happy with my 2 yr old Troy-Bilt w/ a B&S professional series 7.75 engine in it. Never bogs down even in wet and tall grass. So far no probs.

Only time will tell if it holds up as well as my old honda mower I had for 18 years, gave it to my brother-in-law, and he says it still runs well.

I would have kept the old Honda and bought the b-i-l an new mower if he needed one.

got our first briggs yesterday a 6hp horizontal on a tiller, dad bought it used off a guy that only useed it once. it seems to run great and it starts in 2-3 pulls but u can tell it isnt a honda the fit and finish on it is terrible.

guy said it wouldnt start so we cleaned the carb and put fresh gas in it and it fired up first pull! the float was stuck and it filled the crankcase with fuel i drained out a quart and a half and it only held 3/4 of a quart when i refilled.

If he only used it once the carb was probably gummed up (result, a stuck float) I have no problems with fit and finish on mine, just dirty gas that plugs up the jet.

should have worded that a little better i meant it had some sharp edges and such on it, wont hurt anything just a nuisance. the thing had sat with untreated gas in it for over a year. it started to act up a little today so i cleaned it again and installed a inline fuel filter we'll se what happens

Who actually manufactures the Vanguard line? Subaru or Mitsubishi?
