cub cadet 6.5hp roadside find...

Thanks for the info everyone. I went all over that engine and must agree it looks like a knockoff.

I ran it at idle for an hour or so to try to burn off the old fuel... it burns a little oil, you can smell it. Odd for a mower that, again, looks like it has under 2 seasons on it. Think I'll dump some maxlife in there, or just cheap 10-40.

As for the kickback--- the manual actually speaks of it!! Apparently they knew this engine had this trait... gently pull through compression stroke, then yank.

Well, the $5 spring should arrive this week, and there's enough metal left on the handle that I'll splint it with angle iron. I can do that for $25 total. if it works, great... if not, oh well. It's a pity, it has a solid metal deck.... harder and harder to find these days.

based on this experience, when it does finally come time to purchase a new mower, it will NOT be a cub cadet.

Actually I remember a LOT of mowers in the 80s with that type of engine. Maybe they were all re-badged Bolens, but I do remember seeing a lot of them in stores like Sears and Wards. My gripe with that generation of B&S engine was the plastic wonder pulsa-jet carb that only ran right when the tank was between 1/2 and 9/16ths full....

Only three years old? It is definitely a MTD product.

Yeah, Sears sold them too. I don't know about Monkey-Wards, but I assume the Sears was a re-branded Bolens

I agree it is definately a MTD product. MTD started putting their engine on 2 years ago. Before that they put honda's and Kawasaki's on the cub cadets.

Yay! Installed $5 spring (12 after shipping) and it started first pull. It's prolly 4mph self-propelled, which is a decent walking clip. Gonna buy $7 worth of metal at lowes, splint the handle, give it an OC and see if I can get a year out of it!!

I saw the *exact* engine with stupid governor guard at harbor freight for $99, chinese junk. But the deck is nice and it doesn't belong to my wife's ex, so it's worth something there!

BTW, www.partstree.com has been very nice to deal with. UPS lost the first shipment and partstree immediately shipped another with fast/upgraded shipping.

haven't gotten to the valves yet. the "list" is so backed up now I'm having a hard time dedicating more than 15 minutes at a time to anything... attic fan job (done but need to change the t-stat, adding needed return vent to "new" (40 yr old) home, sealing A/C leaks, fighting AL wiring, best man in a coming wedding... Gonna *try* to splint the handle this weekend...

But I will check them. Can't find the clearance spec online. may just make sure they have a tiny bit of play and if they feel ok then leave 'em.

I musta squeezed out on the cheap ones then. There is no indication of any MTD affiliation on the instructions or labeling, unlike other MTD products I've seen that 'advertise' heavily the MTD name. Either way, its not a bad mower at all, seems likes it's built pretty good.

Maritime Storm, thank you. It gets a test-run soon. Handle is splinted. There's some 15-40 standing by to top it off... :-)

TEST MOW:

Engine ran fine, finicky to restart. It tore through thick bush like it wasn't there. Effective high-lift blade! Boots/Jeans required b/c it picked up every bit of debris it found and threw it 20 yards.

Then the self-drive failed in the right side rear wheel.

I'm keeping it as a brush machine.

We bought a honda mower this weekend for grass-cutting. Ahhh back to a honda...
