CTEK + Odyssey = New Charger

Has anyone actually used the Odyssey chargers? I'm considering getting the 15amp in the future.

I wouldn’t necessarily say my expectations of speed are “misdirected”. My motopowers are 1 amp and will charge almost as fast as my 4 amp Pulsetech. I’m more irritated that this battery had been fully charged in the day and Pulsetech went through its whole algorithm to charge it. Most of my other chargers I have recognizes the state of charge and goes from there. I’ve had a car on my Pulsetech since yesterday, so after a few cups of coffee I’m going to put the battery minder on it and see what it does. My pro logix does the same thing.

I was 100% wrong. I hooked up the battery minder after the Pulsetech and within 10 minutes, it went to fully charged. Apparently I should have tested my agm before I hooked it up. That battery is always struggling with the smart charge setup. Battery minder seems like it’ll be just fine.

I did order the 2012 agm from Rvupgrade. $105 with a 25 ft extension cable. I can’t find what voltage my Nissan agm should be floating at so hopefully this thing isn’t to aggressive on a standard Agm.

Might be cheaper here, as they do not charge shipping or tax. Did you order the standard 2012? The 2012 AGM is more expensive.

The agm version. It was $93.50 and to get free shipping you had to spend $99, so I ordered an extension cable.

I noticed they charge sales tax...or maybe your state it tax free anyway?
Battery Stuff does not charge sales tax.
Yeah they do. With tax and a 25ft extension cable my total was $115.56.
$93.50 for the charger
$14.50 for the cable
$7.56 in tax
Free shipping over $99
The difference in the cost of the agm covered the tax and I needed another extension cable, plus this place is only a few hrs from my house so shipping was relatively quick.

I just ordered one of the "new" Odyssey chargers. Got the OBC-15A. We'll see how it works out. I'll use it exclusively for my Odyssey batteries and use my CTEK 7002 or MXS 5.0 for the others.

I honestly wonder how much an odyssey charger matters? Most people who own one and aren’t educated on the need for charging, would never see anything more than what their alternator supplies. For new cars with smart charging, that supply would be all over the map. My oem agm which is probably a clarios, is constantly being undercharged by what the car offers. I started with a full battery the other day, with only a days worth of driving, the state of charge was down in the 70s. I keep thinking about an odyssey, just because, but can’t rationalize the cost and then I think about a two week roadtrip and what my cars system would do to it.

I got it because it was on the approved list, price was pretty close to others with the same amps. Plus, didn't want to give them the ability to deny warranty cause I used a non approved charger.

In terms of the Odyssey batteries, if I didn't get the 20% off from Napa, I may have gone a different route. Between Napa having the best price before the discount and then the discount, I thought it was worth it. Brought them much closer in line to other AGMs except the Everstart Platinum, which was my second choice.

Napas where I’d go as well. I thought about one but my car can’t keep an Oem battery charged on its own. I just got the battery minder agm delivered last night and it’s odyssey approved, just in case. Keep it charged and it should last many many years.

I've been trying to hook up all 4 cars to chargers once week but since my I'm back in the office full time, it's harder than I thought it would be. Still gonna try.

Install ring mounts on all your cars so you don't have to open hoods or anything. It makes it much easier to manage. The only issue I had was that most of the included ring mounts with battery tenders are too short to run out the grill. So you would still have to open the hood. I spliced and extended a couple of mine, then found that Battery Saver makes them with 6 foot cables and bought a couple of them. https://www.batterysaver.com/store/p63/2087.html

Also helps to have more than one battery tender. I'm down to eight, as I gave a bunch of mine away to friends and family members as I narrowed down which ones I prefer most.

I don't mind opening the hood. Gives me a chance to look around and make sure everything is kosher. At the moment, I have a CTEK 7002, MXS 5.0 and a Schumacher something or other that I was using for my Audi many years ago. I don't use that one anymore.

I'm trying to minimize hood opening. My 2001 BMW, just from normal oil checks and such over 24 years, I have replaced the hood release cables three times. If you start opening 52 times a year, along with any other maintenance checks and services....just a word of warning.

Fortunately on the old BMW, the cigarette lighter is always energized, so it is easy to plug that in there, and run the cable out the door...the thick double door seals easily collapse without damage. So I am not opening any extra times.

I’d like to run something, somewhere, but haven’t seen anything clean looking. My cigarette lighters are only hot till the dome lights kick off so that won’t work. I suppose I could run an extension out the grill but I think it would look tacky.

Here is a pic of the new Odyssey 15 amp charger compared the CTEK 7002. It's huge.
