CTEK + Odyssey = New Charger

Too bad they don't publish the algorithm used in their chargers. Or IP rating. Also if the lowest amp version (5amp) has an SAE plug (or not) to use with ring mounts for long term maintanence charging. Clamps are required for higher amp charging, but SAE plugs increase connection options.
Maybe more details will arrive later. I don't see the chargers available for sale yet on Odyssey's website.

From the blurry photos it does not look like the 25A charger will have a cooling fan.

The CTEK PRO25S ($565 ! ) looks very similar to the upcoming Odyssey 25A charger. Don't see a cooling fan. The temperature sensor is in the battery clamp. I would expect the Odyssey version to have a unique charging algorithm optimized for TPPL batteries. At the very least, charging at 14.7V and float at 13.6V instead of 14.4V and 13.0V.

At the end of the day an Odyssey battery is too expensive for most to consider. It's roughly 2X the cost of a East Penn AGM I could get at Walmart or NAPA. And the warranty is not 2X.

My truck takes two batteries and my boat takes three batteries. That would add up quickly.

One thing going for them, is that Odyssey is the only brand I see in Consumer Reports testing that is consistently at the top. Pretty much all other brands are mixed. They might excel in one size, then middling or even at the bottom in another size.

My BMW also takes two batteries, an H8 and H5, but I would seriously consider Odyssey when the time comes.

I had one several years ago and it was great. I refused to pay what they were asking and at the time were private labeling the Sears Platinum AGM batteries, and got it for only $160 or so. That ended a long time ago...no idea if Odyssey private labels to any other retailers.

What charger/maintainer is recommended for Odyssey AGM batteries that doesn't cost $200?

I currently have a CLORE PL2320 and a Battery Tender that both have AGM settings? Also will the BA9 be adequate for testing the Odyssey batteries?

Use the PL2320, set at 20A. Odyssey recommends charging voltages (at 77F) of 14.7V and 13.6V float. If you check the charging voltages with a DMM, you will see that the "AGM" setting is too low, and the "standard" setting will be more closely aligned with the recommended voltages. I own a PL2320, and that is what i discovered.

Thanks for the information. I will set at "standard 20A"

Battery Minder 2012 AGM
This retailer (I have bought my Battery Minders from), has the lowest online prices, does not charge sales tax, and free shipping.

If you want a little more versatility, this one has more chemistry options and charging rates:

Thanks and most likely will order the 128CEC2.

I'm recently convinced the Battery Minder desulfation algorithm works better than my other battery tenders. I always assumed they were similar. One of my cars has always been on a Granite Digital Save a Battery tender and I noticed in the past year that it is slowly losing CCA on my tester. (Granit Digital claims their algorithm has an automatic pulse desulfation always active.) So I swapped and put it on the 128CEC2 and over the past 6 to 8 weeks I have seen the CCA slowly RISE.

This battery is now 6 years old, but one year ago, the battery was still around 1020 CCA (rated at 900). It has been dropping until in mid November or so it was reading 874. I started intermittently using the 128CEC (around 5 nights a week) and started going up, reading around 915 CCA in December....yesterday it tested at 957CCA

Actually cheaper here with free shipping, but they charge tax:

Strange that some places list the 128CEC1 and others list it as 128CEC2.

Thanks and most likely will order the 128CEC2.
The float voltage on the 128CEC1, when in the dedicated Odyssey mode, was lowered to 13.2V around 2 years ago, 0.4V below what Odyssey recommends.

Good information and thanks. I see some websites says the 128CEC1 has been replaced by the 128CEC2.

Battery Minder tech support claimed they lowered the float voltage on the AGM settings as customers were experiencing overcharging damage/problems to batteries. I have been using them without issue, but not specifically on an Odyssey. Supposedly you only use the AGM model or mode, on Odyssey or Optima, and the float setting for all other AGMs. I have been using a 2012AGM on an Interstate AGM without issue. But I do use the 128CEC2 in the flooded setting on my other AGMs in my BMWs which are BMW branded or AC Delco branded, but both manufactured by Varta in Germany.

I meant to say you use the "flooded" setting with all AGM batteries other than Odyssey or Optima. (not float)
