Have a 90 CRX Si 1.6... recommended oil 5w30. Want to switch from Valvoline 5w30 conventional to Motorcraft 5w20 SemiSynth. Faithful 3k changes. For year round in TX. Any thoughts? See a problem? Thx, S

I wouldn't do it. As mentioned, the 1.6 Honda's burn oil, a 20-wt. might well accelerate this.

MC makes a 5w30 synblend...why not use that?

I owned a couple of these --'90 and '91 Si's. Extraordinarily reliable, fun cars. If I still had one, I'd continue with the oil type and viscosity recommended by Honda, 5w30. (WFIW, your engine was never back-spec'ed by HMC to 5W-20.) Also, the 3K oil changes seems unnecessary.

I did it in my 89 CRX DX. Nothing to write home about as far as used oil analysis #s. Made it burn a little more oil than usual and still does. Didn't kill it, didn't do it any good.

I tried doing the 20w thing to see what would happen, but I've gone back to 5w30. I wouldn't do it in my car if I was in the heat of a Texas summer.

I have a used oil analysis from the experiment in the used oil analysis section.

Your engine will run 'cooler' with 20w....and hotter with 30w....
Lighter oils dissapate heat faster....go for it!

You haven't mentioned how you drive your car? Short trips or all highway (fast or slow)? How oftn do you use WOT?
Annual mileage?

Short trips, no high speed highway use and rarely use WOT then the 5W-20 would be fine otherwise stick to 5w30.

I've owned several of these cars (have 2 now) and Im just curious and would like to consilidate oil a bit for the fleet. The car has 200K miles, and I have put over 100k of them on there. Always used Valvoline 5w30 conventional 3000-4000 mile oil changes and no complaints (obviously) typical Honda... runs like new. I drive a mix, but I drive the car (ALL my cars) HARD. Change the cam belt\water pump about every 80K and visit redline every time I drive it. Like a couple of the respondents I was just curious and wanted to consilidate weights, brands etc a bit. I with modern oils all being so good, I will just stick with the dino, OCI an do what Im doin and go on. Thx for all the responses guys.

Not having an oil temp gauge, I couldn't say whether it did or didn't. I would doubt, however, if it made much difference.

I sure didn't baby it when I drove it. I made sure it was a good test. The engine revved more freely, the water temp was the same. But I didn't think it was worth it at 270k miles. I have to make sure it runs until the wife's car is paid off and I can get something else. The rust is really taking its toll, though the engine is still kicking hard.
