Crush washer truth

I love that the drain bolt gm uses has a gasket in the bolt head lasts forever. Wish every oem did that but you can likely find an after market bolt so you never have to use a crush washer again.

Here's some heresy:

I think crush washers are there to maintain a good surface for the drain bolt to seal against. If that surface got damaged in some way you'd have to replace the oil pan. So the manufacturer recommend a crushable washer because it can be replaced easily.

I re-use mine many times.
That’s my understanding as well. Washers exist to alleviate spinning friction between the bolt and surface. I’ve never replaced my crush washers. Never had leaking issues. Too lazy to procure and keep track of them.

Since this is post 121 on a washer - if the pain and suffering might end soon - I’m willing to no longer reuse a washer …
Peace bros … ✌️
Pfft. Wasteful. Way to kill the planet. ;)

Unless of course you plan to "repurpose" those old washers as art. Or maybe jewelry.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead but I am looking at sourcing my washers from somewhere else. Currently I am getting them from Gold Plug. I have 2 vehicles that take 1/2 inch washers for the GoldPlug Magnetic Drain Plug AP-04, 15mm Hex Head M12 x 1.75 Thread

$9 for a 5 pack seems kind of pricey. Gold Plug washer

I would assume that I could use any M12 crush washer I find on Amazon like these @ 25 for $4.49? Aluminum M12 Crush Washer

I change my crush washer at every oil change on my Honda... They are cheap...also on a honda the crush washer even goes on a certain way...the washer has two different sides to it...

I enjoy this pic. To be fair, it had text instructions I deleted. I think you just drop the washer in the fill hole along with the oil and it seals it up. No?!?

Seriously, for $12 I might try that assortment to restock.

I've kinda come to like the true "crush" washers, like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JQFH5V2

There's something psychologically satisfying about feeling them compress as you snug them.

I don't think it really matters what you use -- it just has to not leak.

I purchase my crush washers and lots of other stuff from BelMetric.

The quality, selection and service is superb.

I'm not a crush washer user as I'm a top extractor but we could make our own on the lathe...eh?

This maybe be subjective but the only crusher washer I replace every time would be for the transmission, transfer case and differential. Engine oil pan I reuse until I feel like it needs to be replaced. I only use OE washers.

I dont reuse crush washers.. although the hyundai style flat alum. washer is fairly reusable.

Now the subaru actually crushing style. I would never reuse unless its an emergency type situation.
In part because the crushing makes it very easy to know how much to tighten the drain plug.
