Is there a way to stop a cruise control from downshifting just on a slight grade which is unnecessary just to maintain a set speed for 10 seconds or so. It really is a nuisance when it does that.
you need to open the throttle a bit before the upgrade. the speeding up will get up the grade without a downshift, because the higher rpm is also associated with more torque. you have to anticipate it a bit, and then you avoid the downshift.

Mine does that... It's a real PITA and I hate it too!
Some units, mostly aftermarket ones, have a 'sensitivity' pot that can be adjusted. Lower sensitivity works OK too. It'll float up and down a mph on the level, but won't open throttle too much/early on slight upgrades.
I just give it a bit of gas before going over the hill to compensate for the lack of speed going up the hill. This prevents the transmission from downshifting unnecessarily because the speed you build up will be enough to get you over the hill before going under the set speed you have your cruise control at, and it won't be as harsh as a downshift to get up to that speed before the hill.

+1 ^^^ another problem is transmission that are 6 speeds, constantly hunting for the right gear for the speed, speed sensitive, manual shifting helps and appreciate mine for this reason.
