Crazy,Rude , inconsiderate bus drivers

That is normal and typical for India. Drivers there are a different level of skill that would make any western person liquidate their bowels. Aunties on scooters weaving in between cars stuck in heavy travel with chickens or grandkids on board, or both. Loads precariously strapped on roofs of cars, trucks, vans. Those road strips and lights are decorative and meaningless. The horn is used to let you know someone is there, not necessarily in anger but for everyone’s spatial awareness.

The minor exception is Delhi near the various embassies where there are police and military checkpoints every few hundred feet where corporal punishment is handed out liberally.

You're not kidding. My dad was in Mumbai for 4 months on a work contract. They had a private driver take them where they needed to go. On one outing the driver struck a pedestrian in a crosswalk, albeit not very fast. The pedestrian hobbled off and apologized to the driver. Only in India.

I recently visited the La Vega area of the Dominican Republic. My queen's family has a few homes in Santiago but her parents home is about 15km in the hilly countryside. I was there with my future brother-in-law who rented a Tahoe. I've driven in other 3rd world countries and some Islands but man, DR takes the cake! So many Chinese knock-off 200-300cc motorcycles. Few stop signs, rare to see police in the countryside, tight roads (recently paved so dirt roads are no longer an issue).

Blind curve intersections meeting up and no traffic control. Mom driving with a 2yr old in front of her and a 5yr old behind her holding a bag of yuca and on the wrong side of the road. Nobody wears a helmet and I have to admit I didn't either when I took a few spins around the area on a cycle. This scene is a constant. Makes driving there feel like your in a video game.

Even in the US ..

When I used to travel for work, every road incident I had or the time I was run into the median, was a bus. A school bus, actually.

It's sort of like a reenactment of Mad Max on the roads of India. I think they are currently averaging 474 deaths per day on their roads. When we were there it was an eye-opener. We decided it was best to leave the driving to someone skilled in their driving style. Interesting sights, smells..., and a sea of humanity. We were glad we went. But also glad we could leave.

cross checking with US statistics. 42,514 deaths / 365 = 112 with a population of 338 million.
India has 1.4 billion, so if you say 474 its about equal in proportion. I bet their injuries are far higher though because of all the scooters.

Yeah this is how they drive. I’m born to Indian immigrants and have been many times. You see similar in other countries as well. Driving in Italy had me thinking I was in India. The best way to think of the driving there which everyone deems to be chaos is to think of how you work your way throgh a crowd as a pedestrian. You are able to maneuver and judge in such a way that you aren’t crashing into people. And others do the same, adjusting speed or moving slightly to the side. As a pedestrian trying to cross a busy city road there, you just walk into the traffic in a deliberate, but slow and predictable way. The traffic just goes around you.
