Filter guy, I have removed ferrous metal shavings by my method (readily attracted to a magnet). Some "spinters" up to 3/8" length, nicely bedded in among the mounting threads. Whether this may've been the result of worn tooling that galled the threads during formation, I don't know, but it does happen with depressing frequency in Champion Labs filters regardless of country of origin. The particles large enough to physically remove and handle are likely of no consequence since they're too large to access the bearing clearances. Still, I'd rather err on the side of caution with several seconds' pre-intall prep than trust my engine to dumb luck. I'm not condemning Champion Labs filters, I'm merely suggesting an ounce of prevention (and solvent) before blithely mounting their replacement oil filters. (or anyone else's for that matter)
