crankcase oil stabilizers?

how for real are crankcase oil stabilizers?
What are they?
And are they worth the $10 per bottle to treat 5 qts, or am I better off putting fresh oil in there?
I see them mostly in boat stores, the idea is to add it to your oil before laying the boat up for winter storage. It's supposed to "stabilize oil chemistry during storage, preventing oxidation and formation of resins and varnish. Protects cylinder walls, connecting rods, crankshaft, and other internal metal engine components from rust and corrosion."
I want to post the link, but any info on them is to a store. If you do a google search on "crankcase oil stabilizer" the 4th link down titled "Sea Bowld - Ez Store Crankcase Stabilizer by Sea+Bowld" is the one I'm reffering to. But I'm sure there are a million other name brands.

Most seem to be comprised of low flash solvents, light viscosity carrier oil, small amounts of glycol ester compounds or amines. Just get some Lube Control and use it all the time. That will take care of any oxidation issue you should have. IMHO, I still think its a good idea to change oil/filter prior to storage. But with LC, it may be a moot point

Are the oil stabilizers a solution looking for a problem?

Install new oil and filter, take a brief run, and put your boat away. Has anyone who's done reasonable maintenance had the listed problems over the many years that boats have had engines?
