Humans must not collect crabs on Ocean Beach.

A lot of seafood sold in the US is not fresh. I used to think that fishy smell that accompanies fish is normal, but after buying very fresh seafood at Japanese markets or eating sashimi, I realized that is not the case. Fresh fish has NO smell at all. If something has a fishy smell it's not fresh

Why do my hands aquire that distinctive scent while cleaning freshly caught, still flopping fish then?

I was thinking the same thing the other day while catching them out of the pond.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure fresh fish does have some amount of smell. That's been my experience at least.
Big glob of toothpaste worked in like waterless hand cleaner then rinsed well removes odor from hands better than anything else I've found.

Worst smelling fish were bone fish that fed on rock crabs. Great for bait because of the smell. The crab would grip themselves on rocky shores. You needed a screw driver or a knife to pry them loose. They had a very strong smell, great for bait. The crabs would feed at night. Just before sunrise you could see thousands of them returning to the rocky shore.
The bone fish which I catch that feeds on shrimp, blue and white crabs doesn't have a strong smell.

Freshwater vs. saltwater? I worked in a fish market when I was a kid, and fresh fish is not odorless, but it doesn't have a "fishy" smell. Sorta depends on the species too. Sharks smell like sharks.
Of course are sharks actually fish?
