2013 Buick LaCrosse with a 3.6L DI engine
Miles on vehicle: 99,673
Miles on oil: 5,211
OLM: 31%
Another CQP and VRP 5W-30 went back on/in.
30 oz of oil added during this run.

Not much to look at after the first run of VRP. I’ve seen other filters cut open here on BITOG that had bits of carbon and such in them. Mine looks good. I guess that’s a good thing. Up until now, the car has always had some sort of Dexos oil like QS, Havoline, etc.

It looks like you have a sound engine after almost 100k miles. You could be trying to clean up a clean engine. I did that with my wife's 08 Liberty and was also pleasantly surprised after using a competitive product. I will be withholding the name however. Nothing wrong with that respected product but sometimes there's nothing to clean.

Filter looks really good. 👍

So you added (used) almost a quart of oil in 5000 miles? I'd give the VR&P a couple more OCI's to see if that improves, but with 100,000 miles on the engine it may just be normal wear at this point.
When I say normal, I mean worn rings, valve guides, and things like that. I'm ignoring any leaks of course.

1 quart in 5000 mi. isn't earth shattering for an engine with nearly 100,000 on it.

The GM 3.6 gets a bad rap. But feed it off the shelf synthetic, keep it topped up, use a great filter, and change it regularly and it ends up like this - no carbon buildup. They can have PCV issues cause oil consumption, but I've seen nothing to indicate ring sticking/blowby issue.

My 2011 Buick 3.6 has used 1qt/5k mi since new, and at 120k mi used about the same.

My parents 2019 Buick 3.6 has used 1qt/5k mi since new, and at 45k still doing about the same.

I'm almost certain it's the PCV design.

On the inside of the can there, what is the substance that is in the shape of the magnets?
Ferrous metals from normal engine wear that is too small for the oil filter to catch. Wear metals from moving parts rubbing on each other that are in the mixed and boundary lubrication realms.

Thread about filter magnets.
