Every female I know carries. Pepper spray is a joke and won't work. Any piece of s**t that's going to do that to a female deserves a bullet to the head. These are mongrels, they are not people. Exterminating these roaches will only make the world a better place. Imagine that being your wife, sister, daughter, and that filthy animal puts his hands on her.

It’s a close contest for me between life in prison or the death penalty because I’d rather just die than to be locked up for life.

It is a great schadenfreude feeling I get when I know that individuals like the Waukesha killer and the 15-year-old school murderer in Michigan will never see freedom again.

Personally, I’d like to see them caged in solitary confinement and given low quality food and literally never let out to see the light of day for the rest of their lives, but that won’t happen.

There is also, however, something to be said for swift execution. As in, taken out behind the courthouse and hanged immediately following sentencing. I think swift, sure punishment such as that actually deters crime, instead of being sentenced to a painless lethal injection (essentially being put to sleep), which may never actually be carried out. And you can reuse the rope.

And then, with capital punishment, taxpayers aren’t wasting money keeping these scumbags alive, paying for 3 hots and a cot and free medical care and recreation (yes, recreation - you’re paying for POS’s like this to have recreation in prison) FOR LIFE.

I've heard the same for years. Pretty sure there's at least an inkling of truth to it. I'm sure it's happened, if not as a matter of course.

But I don't think there's a good chance of getting a fair trial in China. I actually don't have any idea how their justice system works for their citizens, but I know what country I'd take my chances in.

I just mean, can we get some punishments in this country that are actual deterrents to violent and heinous crimes? Can we get some changes to our criminal justice system that ensure that death sentences (yes, I'm in favor of capital punishment) are carried out swiftly in cases where it's an open-and-shut case? Again - that ensures that the penalty is a deterrent to those who would commit these violent, brutal crimes.

I favor hanging as a method of execution in cases of violent, heinous crime because, historically, and, I believe, still, today, it's a form of execution that has been reserved for those criminals who have committed dishonorable and cowardly crimes (for example, the criminal who carjacked OP's female friend). I found an article stating that hanging is still on the books in 3 states - Washington, New Hampshire, and one other state I can't remember. We seriously need to start using it.

Crime keeps getting worse.

You know what they say about continuing to do the same thing over and over while getting the same result.

We need to try different methods.

I'm not saying we become Red China or Singapore (anybody remember Michael Fay?)

I am saying I think we can get tougher on crime and revise our penalties to make them actual deterrents to crime, while still maintaining this as the most fair and just criminal justice system in the world.

Probably boils down to philosophy. One system it's better to let 100 people go free than kill one innocent person. The other is better than 100 criminals die and no big deal if an innocent person dies here and there. Only issue is if you're the innocent one.

Barkleymut, I'm glad your friend was not physically harmed. The mental and emotional recovery will be tough. I wore a badge for 27 years and lived in the Midlothian area for 11 of those years. In what part of town did this carjacking occur? South Richmond, East End, Church Hill, Northside?

I guess it depends on what the meaning of random is.

I live in a area that is highly touted as one of the most livable places in the US. (Seattle area). In this region we average a tad over 1800 vehicles stolen each month. A percentage of those are carjackings. In fact, Neighborhood Scout rates our area a 2 on their crime scale of 1 to 100 with 100 being the safest.

No matter where you live there is crime. Hopefully she recovers and learns from this experience. Vigilance is key.

Random is one of those words that meaning is pretty well established and universal. At least in the context here. I hope you never get to intimately know "random" violence. It has long-term effects well past any physical harm.

Something may be wrong with your number of stolen vehicles per month. That is more stolen cars than the entire state of NY. Kings County is about 2.5 million persons and NYS is 20 million. US News has a different take, and a little more credibility IMHO than Neighborhood Scout. I was surprised to see higher property crime rate than Chicago? Who knew.

I have heard from some colleagues who lived in the Seattle burbs that it was the most amazing, beautiful city. They began seeing drastic changes about 2014 and the city has declined since. Full disclosure, the colleagues were upper brass from Kings County BCI. This was a riveting watch:

Last night a coworker of mine (and close friend) got carjacked as she pulled up to her apartment. She lives in a fairly rough part of town and she is a cute 23 year old girl that weighs maybe 95 lbs. The scum (don't know if it was armed scum) took her car, phone, purse, keys and left her paralyzed with fear. This poor girl is going to be emotionally scarred for a long time. Don't know why I am posting this...just needed to vent

I am very sorry to hear this.

You guys probably know I travel a lot for my aircraft maintenance job. For a while it was over 10K mi per mo. As you might imagine, I've had a handful of experiences over the years.

The only advice I can offer that seems to be worthwhile is to avoid troublesome areas by a wide margin. I'm a capable, very well armed, and rather robust guy, it seems to matter not. Maybe many criminals are stupid and will move forward with their plan.

About 1.5 years ago, out of Savannah, GA, I had two thugs in a green Camry relic try to take me down in my F150. I wish I had a "tune" on it, as its 94mph top speed limiter kept me within their aimpoint. I'm glad I did not make the news (in any capacity) and had a dashcam. But need a rear facing camera too. The forward footage showed nothing much worthwhile. (although it did show a portion of the front of the Camry at one point).

I'd like to think that I could draw fast enough to save my life. But despite years of training and shooting, that's not likely to be a reliable way to win when criminals get the "jump" on ya. Staying out of the cities is far more effective. Especially Detroit....

This is something I've advocated for many years. An ounce of prevention, etc.

Think about your daily commute. You go through a bad area every day? Uh, why? The "shortcut" that gets you carjacked or killed is a lousy shortcut.

Turns out there were 6 of them. 6 freaking guys. Police have identified 2 of them, not sure if they have made arrests. The car was found, and it was not damaged

While I agree I also realize not everyone has the ability to move. Also many of these bad areas are still low-ish risk. Turned around, one could ask, why drive a car when you need a seatbelt and airbags etc to be safe? so much saft equipment required, isn’t that an admission that driving is too dangerous and thus one should avoid?
