CoWorker got carjacked

Last night a coworker of mine (and close friend) got carjacked as she pulled up to her apartment. She lives in a fairly rough part of town and she is a cute 23 year old girl that weighs maybe 95 lbs. The scum (don't know if it was armed scum) took her car, phone, purse, keys and left her paralyzed with fear. This poor girl is going to be emotionally scarred for a long time. Don't know why I am posting this...just needed to vent

**If you ever plan on visiting Richmond VA to view all of the history, do yourself a favor and do not stay the night anywhere near the city. This place is bad, really bad, and it is getting worse.

Its going to get worse....

Life is often circular. Unfortunately, we are in a period where criminals have been bolstered and the lack of responsible DA's in many areas increases the rate of the random criminal acts. It's truly a shame this 23 year old had this occur. Chances are this event has literally stolen a good deal of youthful innocence from her. While great she is not injured, she can never get that innocence back.

Amen Biscut, She is a sweet person and doesn't have a mean bone in her body.... This is her first experience living in a "big city".

The problem is that people are nuts.

This is really sad that these things have to happen. I hope she gets over this traumatic event quickly.

So instead of having the trauma of losing an insured? car she can have the trauma of shooting someone after having 0.2 seconds to analyze the situation. Even if the perp had it coming I wouldn't want to remember looking in his face as I shot him.

Lock your doors, get a car with a fob you can leave in your pocket (so it unlocks as you approach and shuts off as you leave), maybe get some pepper spray if you want to escalate.

A lot of that goes on daily a few miles east of where we live. One day I was thinking.... "While car jacking is such a very dangerous crime, why do a lot of people try to overlook it?" In the old days, they HUNG horse thieves. That seems kind of harsh. Yet this modern day car jacking sure is a lot deadlier in many cases. Of course we CAN NOT even suggest making any criminals pay for a crime, lest we hurt someone's feelings. Even young teen age girls are doing that now since they know they won't pay a price for it.

Way back when I was a lot younger (late 90's) State Police academy instructor who was trying to mitigate the I'm a big bad guy kinda attitude made the following statement. I've found it to be pretty realistic. So, don't lose faith. Lots of crazy people out there but most of us aren't. You only get the sensational negative spoon-fed by media.

10% of humans are truly good; 10% are truly evil; the rest of US are somewhere in between. And he finishes emphatically with REST OF US meaning you and me!

I want to believe that. From your own experience as an LEO? Do you see it? Believe it? or know it is? By the way "thank you for your service to the community where ever it is or was." Retired? You all deserve so much more thanks and respect than the general public gives to you all for serving.

In my heart I believe it. Please, consider where you get your information from.

Overall, people are good. True, random crime is rare. But when it occurs, it is sensationalized.

I guess it depends on what the meaning of random is.

I live in a area that is highly touted as one of the most livable places in the US. (Seattle area). In this region we average a tad over 1800 vehicles stolen each month. A percentage of those are carjackings. In fact, Neighborhood Scout rates our area a 2 on their crime scale of 1 to 100 with 100 being the safest.

No matter where you live there is crime. Hopefully she recovers and learns from this experience. Vigilance is key.

Feel very bad for that young lady...

South of the James River is ROUGH especially inside Rte 150... And Laburnum Ave and Nine Mile Rd North of the James is rough too.

Even areas not far away from Monument Ave are a bit rough too.

Channel 6 had a news truck shot at during the broad daylight back in the late 80s... Bullet holes all through the truck. Guys didn't like being video taped.

Richmond had 100+ murders per year in the 80s into the 90s. Always top 5 murder per capita in the US bank then. 200,000 people lived in Richmond at that time.

The interstate 95 corridor drug trafficking was the problem. Richmond then DC, Baltimore, Philly, NYC, northward we're all very rough during that time.

Barkleymut, I'm glad your friend was not physically harmed. The mental and emotional recovery will be tough. I wore a badge for 27 years and lived in the Midlothian area for 11 of those years. In what part of town did this carjacking occur? South Richmond, East End, Church Hill, Northside?

Just about all of Richmond is "a fairly rough part of town". I go there only when I must, and stay away from downtown and the east side in particular.
My sil lives near the catholic school off monument and the neighborhoods around there are going gangbusters with $$$ homes. Seems very safe.

But it seems like lower tier cities get a lot of questionable folks as the pricier first tier cities clear out the bad neighborhoods.

Glad she is safe. As the father of a 16yo pretty young daughter who will be heading off to make her own life too soon for me, I hate hearing these stories and try to think how to learn and teach from them.

On the upside, this will be a learning event for her and hopefully she will be more alert, cautious or just more situationally aware.

Pepper spray may be a good idea, but worthless if you are not paying attention. I prefer a pistol when appropriate, but understand that choice is not for everyone.

I stayed in Richmond not that long ago, the Quirk Hotel between the Jackson and Monroe areas, seemed to be a nice, vibrant area but got the feeling that we probably didn't want to stray more than a few blocks at night. No particular reason, just experience.

Every female I know carries. Pepper spray is a joke and won't work. Any piece of s**t that's going to do that to a female deserves a bullet to the head. These are mongrels, they are not people. Exterminating these roaches will only make the world a better place. Imagine that being your wife, sister, daughter, and that filthy animal puts his hands on her.
