Could i put old tires out to the curb?

Same here - you pay up front on the new tire, even if your keeping the old.
I've seen some tire shops around that keep those used tires locked up in a fenced-in pen and one suggested they can be "audited" (maybe by the EPA) to make sure the # they properly dispose of match their sales paperwork. I'm sure there's some allowance so if someone insists on taking their old tire(s), they can get away with it. This is what Discount Tire says:

Disposal Fee
$14.00
A refund can be requested at your store if you decide to keep your existing tires
The Disposal Fee covers the cost for a licensed regulated disposal service to properly discard your tires.

Honestly this is one of the few cases that a curb alert on Craigslist is best.

If you live in a suburb sloppily write free on a waste piece of paper taped to the set at the curb.

Take a mediocre photo and list as free on craigs with no way to contact you, they should disappear over a weekend

Getting rid of tires in NY is a pain! Or used to be.

Due to the mosquito problem, the transfer stations in my county now take tires on a per-pound basis. I've been able to get rid of them.

In the past I have tried to get rid of tires and just sat on them for a few years until someone was scrapping a vehicle then I'd jam them in the scrap vehicle.

Coolant, too. Coolant is near impossible to get rid of .

Are refrigerated appliances also free?

It depends on your local laws but in my experience you usually have to pay for those.
You can take refrigerated appliances to the county waste facility but it might only be free 1-2 times a year, otherwise you pay a fee. Scrap yards won't take them unless they've had the freon evacuated. A lot of people don't know this and think if they put a fridge, freezer, window AC, etc at the curb, it stays there. At most, the scrappers might steal any exposed copper. I'm sure there are scrappers out there who will take them and chop them into small enough pieces, dump it with other metals, and the yard doesn't catch it. Most of the scrappers won't to fill their truck bed or trailer and go straight to the scrap yard though without touching the stuff more than necessary.

I busted out laughing today at the guy that said put them to the curb with a for sale sign so someone will just steal them 😂 I didn't realize how funny that really was. I'm going to put 4 tires out there for $100 😂

In the city scrappers are like unheard of, but now thst I'm out in the country we have tons of junk removal services and scrappers by the dozen. Maybe everyone out here has a barn packed full of junk or something

I've seen a few around here. I think they come and go. Like a side hustle. Or maybe they move on, change of jobs or whatever.

In olden days, people tossed stuff out back--or hoarded it. Person dies, property sells, whatever--occasionally a place needs cleaning out. Guessing those guys live for that opportunity, and get by doing small jobs (again, side hustle).

My neighbor does junk removal, demolition, etc He seems to be home most days if the week while his wife drives downtown 5 days a week. Must be nice to be him 😒

Just put out the garbage this morning, we didn't travel anywhere, and good thing, I "suddenly" have to work today (kids, never ever accept a job with on-call duties--one of the biggest regrets of my career)?

Looking around at the other houses, there was NOT ONE other home with any trash. When normally, it's not hard to spot commercial trash entering the residential stream (homes like ours with 5 44 gal trash cans and all kinds of odd objects, it doesn't add up of course). Just an observation. I don't think they'd take tires, but my buddy said in his opinion they would have taken a microwave (I did a Sopranos Satriale's on it and threw it out piece by piece).

That's because they're either hung over still in bed or left at 4am for black friday sales and weren't the least bit concerned about the trash

I refuse to pay that ridiculous $5 disposal fee they charge. We have all these metal scrappers around here that will come and pickup a TV or a dryer, so I don't see why 7 or 8 old tires would be out of the question. Years ago I sold tires that were on rims that were totally bald. The guy didn't care because he was just using them around his farm I guess is what he said. Opinions? I chew through so many trailer tires that I'm developing quite a stack. Trailer tires go bald so quick. I think they just assume that 90 percent are just going to dry rot and hardly ever be on the road.
I guess if $20.00 is going to break you, start a "Go Fund Me" page.

The last time I needed to dispose tires I waited until the Hazardous disposal day in our community. You could get rid of up to nine tires that day, no cost.
