the last time i bought a costco battery was before the new policy . i am in need of a 51 r for the CRV . i can get a costco 51r for $124 with the 36 month prorated warranty or the walmart everstart plus with 2 year warranty for $110 . The costco one is rated at 500 while the walmart is rated at 425.

Where is live (Sea area) it does not get too hot or cold . The last costco battery in the CRV lasted 5 1/2 years

So help me decide

I'd go with the Walmart one. Once you have the CCA you need you don't need more, and getting more compromises other parts of the battery, eg you get thinner plates that short more easily.

There are many here who will try to convince you to fit a bigger sized battery. It could even be cheaper. It will certainly be a few pounds heavier.

What year CR-V? You can easily fit a 24F in most years with very little modification.

Here is a recent BITOG thread where a member did the upgrade to a 24F battery for a 2003 CR-V (Gen. 2). The process is nearly identical for your 2017 CR-V (Gen. 5), except you would need to replace the negative (-) battery cable with one that is ~6" longer.

That ain't enough CCA. 500 is better than 425.

Uh, I look for two things in my correct battery size: warranty and more importantly, “Reserve Capacity.”

I would take a higher RC and a three year warranty over a higher CCA and a three year warranty all day.

I'm in your same vicinity and while I am at Costco twice a week for gas, I get all my car batteries now at WalMart (last four in fact). I'm sure flooded are fine, but I go AGM for WalMarts four year free replacement warranty. They are $190 now though... :( as they just raised their battery prices last month. Out west, Costco and WalMart sell the same exact Clarios batteries. Just different labels.

BTW, you are not comparing apples to apples in your example. The comparable flooded battery at Walmart has 500cca and is $150. Which includes a three year free replacement warranty.

The Maxx is comparable to the Costco....not the Plus. I only buy the Platinum AGMs.

I am aware you post very useful content. We can all appreciate that.

My question is does it really make a material difference in upgrading the ground cable wire? Only way to find out is with an amp clamp to see if you are actually getting an increase amp flow to determine if it's actually beneficial.

ended up just going to costco as usual. did not want to deal with the WM return line . if this battery last as long as the old one i got my monies worth .

but i did notice a battery at costco that had an x on it. Was dated 9/25 . wonder what happened to it .

Would you consider Sams? I believe their batteries are made by East Penn. 3 year free replacement.

Just put in a EverStart Maxx in my son’s 22 HRV. The old one didn’t test good and had some green funk around the positive post. The new Walmart battery is a 500 cca and when tested, it showed 610 cca.

Batteries are fickle products, even the best manufacturers like X2 Power and Odyssey can put out the occasional turd.

BTW, I see on reddit, some Costco members have experienced a full refund on a defective battery, even with the pro-rated warranty. I think this is location dependent, but appears there is some "flexibility" by store managers on how they apply it.

I'm not sure about Costco, but I know NAPA used to have a free replacement period, then after that it was pro rated. Maybe Costco adopted that rule? Most now, I think, just have the free replacement period, no pro rating.
