COSTCO diesel

No rhyme or reason. Inner city may avoid it to keep large vehicle congestion down.

Out of the many Costco in Alberta only 2 sell deisel.

I deliver fuel to Costco sometimes and have asked this question. Nobody really knows.
 
From a common sense perspective, diesel fuel would potentially attract 18 wheelers and that would heavily congest Costco's vehicle traffic.

Also on the non-commerical side there is very little demand for diesel within the metropolitan areas that Costco has their locations. Less than 5% of today's new vehicle purchases are diesel and a large number of those are heavy duty trucks which are typically located in the rural areas of the country.

Costco would have to be dealing with heavy traffic issues without any major benefit in terms of profits and revenue. They would be shooting themselves in the foot given that the bulk of their locations are located near commercial shopping districts and other high traffic areas that are near their bread-and-butter customers.

I've never seen a Costco station that's set up for anything large to refuel - especially the roof. And they have enough difficulties as it is getting fuel deliveries in. I'm sure any Costco selling diesel limits it to passenger cars or maybe cargo vans. I mean - the clearance for the roof should prevent refueling by semis.

I have seen a few of these, where I guess the pumps are labeled as fuel rather than gasoline.

The cost to dig up the parking lot,run pipes to the pump etc isn't worth it. Costco here has been in the same place for decades and was never designed with diesel in mind. Maybe only newer ones get diesel?
 
Age of store may play a part. The older Costco's in KC area don't offer diesel because Costco didn't sell diesel originally in this area. The newer Costco's built later have it in this area and Springfield, MO. The newer Costco's also have more fuel pumps to service customers quicker.
 
I'm not sure that the decision to offer diesel fuel at a Costco location has anything to do with state by state. Here in Utah, there are four Costco locations that offer diesel. All three locations hare in fairly densely populated areas. I have never seen a big rig try to fuel up at either of the two of these locations that I have visited.

Costco website lists 23 states with locations that offer diesel.
 
The only Costco I have seen with Diesel was in Kenosha, WI off WI-50 (just two exits north of the IL on I-94). I think it was back in 2023 that I saw a sign on the pumps saying they were getting rid of Diesel at x date in the future.

My guess at the time was they weren't getting enough business to warrant having the diesel around but it's just speculation on my part. I wonder if they converted the diesel tanks to gasoline so they'd have more storage room and the tanker could come less often?
 
I have to believe it is a supply and demand issue. Not to mention, no way is anyone with an 18 wheeler or large RV going anywhere near that insanity! Besides my Open Roads RV card gives me better deals than Costco can likely provide and I get to use the truck pumps.
 
I was glad to see this topic. I am a Costco Member. I emailed Costco-Kirkland directly some time back asking if they were considering adding any diesel pumps at my Costco. Their response was no plans for a diesel pump(s) at my location. I was disappointed and further indicated to the Costco Representative there are diesel pick up truck owners who shop Costco daily. The Representative didn't seem to care about that.

I'm guessing there are several things that factored in with this current decision but here are a few I thought of:

1- The cost of making the fuel island larger with diesel pumps
2- Additional fuel island traffic if the diesel pumps were not isolated from the gasoline pumps
3- The previous administration wasn't friendly toward fossil fuels


I appreciate Costco- Kirkland Top Tier Fuels, in my opinion Top Tier Fuels are the way to go. The price of Costco- Kirkland Top Tier Fuels are always cheaper than the other fuel stations Top -Tier or Non-Top Tier, in my area. I am hoping that Costco decides to add diesel pumps, even one diesel pump would be great at their fuel islands. Plus, it will be Top-Tier Diesel Fuel which isn't easy to find nowadays.

Our new store just opened in April and doesnt have diesel. I was disappointed since I just bought a diesel pickup.

They don’t want big commercial vehicles filling up and giving Costco a bad look.

They can can fill up at Flying J if they need diesel.

I agree, they do not want the big rigs at their pumps. Measures could be taken by Costco to address this.

Wisconsin only has 3 Costco locations that count and are accessible to me
closest a miniature Costco being 105 miles away.

The other 8 costcos in state are distant but are all within walking distance of each other similar to Kwik trip in a part of the state that doesn’t really count as being in Wisconsin. (Following the southern border)

I’ve never really understood the logic of how Costcos are located but it means I go to Woodmans and Sam’s because it simply isn’t worth the drive + cost of entry.

Too bad Costco doesn’t have a reduced membership plan based on your distance to a store and having a membership to ship is stupid.

One thing I’ve always found perplexing is why Costco doesn’t have a blender style pump, then all the common octanes would be available using the same stack. As is Sam’s has 92 octane but Costco 91/87 only.

They would have it like Bucc ees. No trucks allowed.
 
I am not sure how accurate my information is, but the closest Costco to me that sold diesel was in Charlottesville, Virginia. Not worth the three hour drive each way lol.
