You don't just fire one round and then see what the effect is...one round generally doesn't end the threat. You fire until the threat is no longer exists...does that kill the subject? Maybe...maybe not...the point is not to kill but to stop the threat. How many rounds is that? How many seconds? Each situation is different....

The sarcastic question about beers is really inappropriate - most officers need psychological counseling after a shooting. Taking a human life, killing someone, even if justifiable, creates tremendous conflict between a person's moral center (thou shalt not kill) and what their job just required of them (to kill)...that's not easy to reconcile and it's a reason why PTSD is so high right now in our armed forces. Even when our troops kill a person shooting at them with an AK-47, they still struggle with the physchological aftermath. Why the rush to judgment in this case? You've found the cops guilty without all the evidence, without knowing all of what happened. Then you've determined, or insinuated, again without knowing, that they are all psychopaths who enjoy this.

Did you get a chance to read any of my posts above on this thread? The situation is not as simple as the video leads you to believe, the camera was at least 5 times as far away from the "hobo" as the cops were...and the video was fuzzy. You aren't seeing what they were seeing. You can't know what they knew at the time just from a video.

If it were me, I would have dropped the A bomb. That would have taken care of the hobo, and the rest of the filthy city too.

All the cops and their sympathizers seriously believe that everybody NOT doing their job have no idea of how HARD their job is and how appropriate this action was.

It is the highest insult to the intelligence of the citizens of this country.

I've never said the action was appropriate or inappropriate. I've tried to help everyone understand more about lethal force and life/death situations.

It must be nice for you to be able to know, absolutely and completely, what happened on the basis of 20 seconds of grainy video shot from across the street.

I just spent 40 hours doing an investigation, in which I gathered 23 pieces of documentary evidence and conducted several interviews, in order to render a fair, complete and accurate judgment on someone's actions in a legal matter...no life/death involved, but important to the Navy and one individual's career, and it took that degree of effort to truly understand what happened.

The same standard of complete, fair and accurate should be applied into the investigation of this shooting.

Sorry, basing an opinion on 20 seconds of video and a bullet count is woefully inadequate, unfair, and an insult to the intelligence and fairness of anyone who has ever had to truly render judgment, judgment that determines the course of people's careers and lives, which is a far cry from just spouting opinion on a web blog.

Surely someone who was deemed too intelligent for Naval Service can see that?

Agreed. I am all for that. I am just as intrigued what triggered such a rampage from folks who are trained to stop rampage.

I would love to see what extenuating circumstances cased 46 shots to be fired at a hobo holding a knife with no civilians in danger around him.
Will I ever get to know that? If not, I stand by my conclusion based upon the 20 second video.

How's that sound like? That is exactly what the cops did with the Hobo there. He was charged, found guilty, and sentenced to death, right then and there.

Ooooh....the cops could not believe they were threatened....oooh.

Maybe this video was shot in Baghdad and the cops were part of Saddam Hussain's firing squad. :sarcasm:

Personally I think that all the non believers here should go out on patrol to confront a knife wielding man, armed with only their wits and superb motor skills...

What I can't believe is the people who can't see what a menace this man was. How many of us have ever had a knife pointed at us? I have - believe it's not something I'd ever want to experience again.
It is SO easy for people to sit here and say "The police should have done this" or "I would have done this" when in reality those people obviously don't know what they are talking about. Pretty easy to say stuff like this on an internet forum!

Also - some keep talking about 46 bullets. Do we have any proof other than "victim's" mother that it was indeed 46? CNN's reporters said they counted 30 bullets. Admittedly the outcome is still the same - I mention it only because some appear to be hung up on the number.

Like Astro said and I thought this from the very beginning - this video is very poor. It is taken from a long distance away and has several interruptions of cars blocking the view of the camera. Unless you were standing there where the police officers were you can't possible know everything that was going on.

Just listening to the video it's obvious this man was confrontational - not only by his actions but his own words. Sorry but when police tell you to drop a knife and you said "I ain't putting s--t down" you have pretty much sealed your fate! They gave him several chances to surrender. What more could be expected? Maybe they should have all held hands and sang "kumbaya" to him. (end sarcasm).

Pretty sad when we pay people to protect us and then criticize them without knowing all the facts.

All said and done, please explain how more than 2 bullets are required to stop a hobo with a knife who was just a nuisance and did not even attack somebody.
