But not in a good way....

My Buddy, who decided to put Cooper CS4s on his beater Cavalier, had a nasty blowout on one of his front tires (pass).
He was able to keep it under control, and save the car. I got to see one pic, and it was toward the top of the sidewall, by the tread. He took it back the the shop, ans they called Cooper. They plan to come out and take a look at the tire.

Good news is that they gave him a brand new tire, no questions asked. (guess the tire explains it all) I think they are sending a gift card for his troubles. The tire themselves only had about 4k on them. This didn't break him though, as he still loves the tires. Best handling tires on a compact ever, he said. (Granted they are 14s :drive) I'm guessing it was just was a bad tire...

Tire engineers routinely do failure analysis of blown tires. Ifthere is enough left of the tire, they can usually find the cause. Most times they find a nail hole (an in and out puncture)which causes a fairly rapid deflation of the tire, and then the resulting failure. Not a tire problem, but a road hazard problem. Best reason to buy road hazard protection when you buy tires.

He took a look at it himself, and he didn't see anything odd. The guy will get back to him on what happened though....

Having a blowout on the steering axle is one of my biggest fears while driving, second only to a lunatic soccer mom.

I'm a little disappointed in the CS4 H rated tires I put on my PT Cruiser. With a little over 15,000 miles (and 2 rotations), they're exhibiting some serious wear for the mileage (alignment is good and wear is even). The tires are very quiet, ride smooth and are great in the wet and good in the snow but the tread wear is not what I had hoped. The T rated may have been a better choice...live and learn.
