Coolant was low on Fusion...

I was adjusting the headlamp aim on our Fusion this morning when I noticed that the coolant level was about an inch below the minimum cold-fill mark (engine was cold, and on level ground). So I topped it off with some distilled water, about 2 1/2 cups worth. Is this anything to worry about? The car is a little over 2 years old, and has never overheated, had coolant in the oil, etc. Maybe a little bit leaked out, or maybe some was lost when the trans was rebuilt a few months ago? (I'm thinking the trans rebuild required removal of some hoses). I'll monitor the level more closely from now on.
 
It is very bad to run low on Fusion coolant. The reaction could accelerate and overload the flux capacitor. Local spacetime could get totally borked and property values in the area would drop like a rock.
 
Worry? I wouldnt. Depends upon if you do used oil analysis or not, to see the presence of glycol and P/K/etc.

Many, many new cars that Ive seen and been around have the scent of antifreeze around the engine bay.

Our 08 rabbit got to be about 1/2" low in the reservoir, and UOA verified no coolant leaks.

Ditto for my 04 saab.

No issues.
 
I should also add that for awhile after we bought the car, you could hear coolant swishing around when you would first turn the heat on, possibly indicating air in the system. That has since gone away, so maybe the level settled. Who knows.

Fords have bad transmissions.And everybody knocks Chrysler and its transmissions...Also research Sienna and Odyssey transmissions.Cant anyone make a transmission last? They used to.

Since those coolants are only going to be replaced at long intervals, I would keep an eye on the level and concentration.

1) Buy some 50/50 coolant that is approved by the manufacturer. Don't get all purpose coolant.
2) Get a hydrometer and calibrate it against the 50/50.

Measure with the hydrometer prior to any further top ups. And use the 50/50 for future top ups, and measure after it's circulated.
 
As an aside, what aftermarket coolant will work with the Motorcraft special green? IIRC, the special green is NOT a G-05 coolant. Correct me if I am wrong.

I don't know for sure. Zerex's website is a good place to start. Just check whether their green is approved by Ford.
 
Depends on the expansion tank design. I was always noticing a small amount of coolant loss in the Camry. Worried about a HG I investigated for a while. Turns out the expansion tank breather is wide open to air in that car, lending itself to easy evaporation when hot coolant meets the cold air of the tank. Secondly, the expansion tank is very small, which means the perceived % of coolant loss looked worse than it was.

So..If something as small as 2+ cups can influence the level of your fusion's tank that suggests a relatively small expansion tank, and a small % of the total has evaporated over time. Because the tank was not empty, there is no harm, and its better to get the correct coolant to top off rather than straight distilled, especially in cold parts of the country. Its not the end of the world, but my hunch is the coolant hasn't been changed in a while, so its already on the weak side of its life span.

Suggestion: Get the right coolant to match whats in there. Don't play games mixing coolant, not worth it. Your not changing it that much, so the cost and inconvenience of getting the dealer stuff is irrelevant. Take the expansion tank off with the cap/breather combo, take it in the house. Drain and rinse both out in the sink. Once the cap/breather is clean, put it all back and refill. This time go above the full line an inch or so. This will leave less air in the tank which will lead to less coolant loss (hopefully)

The old 4 speed ZF autobox they put in a lot of UK made vehicles was a strong box, it was in the V8 LDV Convoy Ambulances we had in London, some can be found now in Cuba and others in Mongolia.

The early Mercedes Sprinters 2003/4/5 had a 5 speed autobox which was smoother but less robust, apparently the newer Merc Sprinters have a 5 speed autobox but it is not as robust.

A lot of people, myself included, think that a lot of cars now are engineered to last 150k miles then be recycled.

This is to hit EU targets likely to "reduce" co2 emissions, though surely more energy is used to make a new car than keep an old one on the road?

Though Renault have invested heavily in electric vehicles which I suspect is the future, there is even a company called Ecotricity that has started to build an EV highway with charge points on the Motorway network to allow EV users to travel many hundreds of miles and charge enroute, they don't charge for the power Nd it is all from wind turbines and other renewable or non fossil fuel based generation systems.

If the green is an OAT, I would go with Peak Global Lifetime which can be found at napa and wallgreens. Its a silicate free, phosphate free, non-2-eha OAT. If you go with the concentrate and mix with distilled on your own, its a cheap alternative.

Note: If your not sure its better to head to an OAT rather than go in opposite direction (HOAT, low silicate, phosphate, 2-eha dex, etc).

I was looking at the Peak global, but I noticed on their website that there is an asterisk and footnote saying to completely flush your system to use the peak global coolant. Is that in regard to the 'lifetime' portion, or will mixing the peak global coolant with the oem coolant be bad?

Yes that is for the guaranteed life time warranty without subsequent changes. 2 reasons. 1) Coolant mixing can diminish the life span of corrosion inhibitors. 2) A radiator drain only gets +-75% of the total, leaving some tired coolant behind. Below that you see "Can be used to top-off any color of automotive antifreeze including green, yellow, orange, fuschia, blue and red. Amber color will not change the current antifreeze color when used for topping off".

Personally I am not bought in that any coolant is lifetime regardless of a flush. I think its best to drain and fill every 3 years. That link is giving you a lot of useful info, far more than most coolants do.

Its basically saying if your draining and filling, do it more often than a flush.

Thanks for that clarifation LeakySeals. I might pick up a gallon of the Peak global for future use. That way I can also use it in my Focus, which uses the premium gold coolant.

No problem. Make sure its "Peak Global Lifetime" on the jug, not any other "Peak". They are all different and it can be confusing.

I agree with you, but many people are willing to run coolant chemistry experiments to save $15 every 5 years.
