I was planning to put some UV dye in the coolant of our '99 Suburban to test for a suspected hose leak this weekend, and set off today on my lunch break to pick up some dye and a blacklight flashlight. Autozone's catalog lists separate dyes specifically for Dexcool and non-Dexcool coolants. The local store didn't have any of the Dexcool stuff in stock, and the package for the other stuff specifically says NOT to use it on Dexcool systems.

I headed over to Napa figuring they'd have a better selection, but they only had one variety. The guy behind the counter had never heard of a Dexcool specific dye and said that the stuff they had is what all the shops get from them to use. Their catalog does not list a Dexcool specific part.

I went ahead and bought it, but I have a little trepidation about it. I wouldn't think 1 oz in something like 6 gallons of coolant would matter except that the other brand's package specifically warns against Dexcool use.

Does anyone know anything about this? Is it possible there are universal formulations that are just more expensive than the cheapest bottom of the barrel stuff they might sell at Autozone or something?
