Grandson picked up a 2004 Lexus V6, going to do the timing belt and water pump, and asking recommendations for coolant as I've got no experience with Toyotas. Thanks

Probably uses Toyota Super Long Life coolant. Its pink and pre-diluted 50/50. You can get them reasonably from your local dealer if they have an online parts store setup thru autoparts.toyota.com

Check your manual as there is a small chance that it uses the old Toyota red coolant. The changeover happened in that timeframe.

Peak and Zerex offer pink Asian coolant formulas as well if the dealer trick doesn’t work.

I just always use OEM coolant. From what I have seen, price difference is minimal. In some cases, a person can get OEM cheaper than some of the current aftermarket offerings. Peace of mind for me, I guess. How much money does a person spend on coolant annually? A few extra bucks, at most, is worth it to me to know I am getting the right stuff.

Zerex Asian red from your local auto parts store. Millions of gallons in millions of cars on the road without any problems.
Zerex Asian Red or Pentofrost A4

What is the benefit over Toyota SLLC?

The Southeastern Toyota dealers are offering an extra 25% discount presently, on top of the standard online discount. Cost per gallon is about $15. Typically around $19 or $20 without the extra 25%. Some dealers ship as well.

I have no particular issue with the Zerex or Pentosin products, but I am not sure what benefit there is to using them. Neither appear to have cost savings.

I would use the pink stuff. It’s cheap at rock auto. No need to pay Toyota’s $28 per gal

The main benefit of Zerex is its cheap and easy to get. Zerex Asian is pretty much exactly like Toyota Red LLC. Both Toyota Red and Zerex Asian use sodium benzoate and potassium phosphate as the main additives. Pink Toyota coolant uses sebacic acid and potassium hydroxide as the main additives.

If you normally buy your parts at the stealership, then there's no advantage to using Zerex except that you can find it everywhere.

I would think to use a different coolant with different additives then one would want to ensure there is none of the old stuff anywhere in the system before adding the new coolant.

I did not know that!

Yeah if you can get it from the dealer that that price, great!

there was a confusion with my 2003 RAV 4 with my dealer regarding the red and pink coolant.
I think mine was red and red was used for the first change.
For the second change 6 years later and a new dealer, I was told pink was the pink should have been used before because of potential head gasket corrosion!
I would double check with toyota if I were you.PS both colors are SSL

SSL?

Red is labeled as Long Life.
Pink is labeled as Super Long Life.

I've had PEAK Global Lifetime in my Corolla for years with no issues. PEAK 10X is also 2 EHA free (as recommended by Japanese makers) and I wouldn't have a second though about running it in a Toyota after a full flush.

I am also using Peak for my 2005 Lexus ES330. Cheaper so I can change it more often without feeling bad. I made sure to do a good flush first. It is the older 10x but it seems like they recently changed that formula so you may want to look at some of their other options.

Is the PEAK 10X new formula still 2 EHA free?
