Coolant leak 1999 Explorer v6

I have a coolant leak at the thermostat housing . I replaced the thermostat about 2 years ago and the bolts are tight .
It loses about a quart every six months.

Do the gaskets normally wear out so soon ?

Thin paper gasket? Those aren't the greatest especially after you've already scraped an old gasket off, maybe nicking the metal.

I'd either use a gooey neoprene type gasket or slather a paper one in RTV silicone before putting it back together.

Is it the 4.0 SOHC V6? If so your housing is leaking.

On the earlier ones they sell the housing as one complete unit, YU3Z-8A586-AA is the p/n MSRPs for $422.78, sell a ton of them somehow.

which 4.0 is it? that's important.

there were 2 different v6 4.0L

And another reason why several aftermarket companies have made replacement parts for these.

MSRP and sell price aren't always the same. You can probably also get something aftermarket that'll work for $100 to $150.

It is the 4.0 SOHC.
I had a hard time replacing the thermostat once I removed the old one- not much room to move without removing other things .

I remember it starting to rain out while I was trying to get at the bolts thinking this will be the last time I will do this . lol !

You meant "this is the last time I will do this [in the rain]" because next time you'll do it when it's snowing?

X2. Very common on the SOHC 4.0. You have to replace the actual housing to fix it.

The little hose on the bottom of it is a [censored]. Have fun.
