My mom's 2000 Golf Gl with the 2.0L 8v engine had a small coolant leak from one of the hoses which I quickly fixed. The reservoir though is down quite a bit so I need to top it off, but with what? I'm not sure what type of coolant the VW cars of this generation use? The coolant color is orange and it looks like dex-cool, but I recall these euro cars had their own type of coolant called G12? I use Zerex in my SAAB and if you look at the application chart on their website it says to use Zerex Dex-Cool?

Zerex Application Chart

I find the chart odd in that it does not list Zerex Asian coolant.

What does the owners manual say it came with? I am not a fan of DexCool unless it actually came with DexCool. If it came with G-12, then I might look a bit for some. Ask the dealer. Maybe they sell a QT of premix which is all you probably need. Given its winter I do not think you need to be in a rush to find the correct coolant.

I've owned watercooled VW's since the late 1970's and every one had a sticker by the coolant bottle indicating what coolant to use.
A 2000 takes G12 and the dealers sell it by the Liter bottle that you mix with distilled water.

Pentosin is the brand that is OEM for VW and Audi...they have G12 and various other versions, specced by VAG.

NAPA and CarQuest will either have them in stock or order it for you.
