The manual says to use Honda OEM fluid, called the dealer, they want $40/gallon!!! Can I use something else or just bite the bullet and spend the $$$ on the Honda coolant from the stealership? Is there anything to it than just draining, flushing with distilled water, and refilling it?

Wow! I would just get zerex GO5 or peak global lifetime. They run well in hondas and are much more affordable. You probably have a two gallon system? Drain as much as you can and fill with distilled water. Run the engine for about ten minutes. Drain again and fill system with a 50/50 mix. You might flush a couple times if it comes out dirty.
The Honda coolant is made by CCI, blue color, and has no silicates or borates.

Wow! $40 a gallon? I just picked some up at a local Honda dealer for around $20, and I felt that was steep since it's pre-mixed. I could have gotten it cheaper online, but shipping would have made it the same price.
My reservoir was a bit low and I didn't want to mix coolants since it didn't need to be changed yet.

How about Zerex Asian. I would use it or Peak Global. I think Prestone only makes Dexcool and Dexcool clones. G-05 is an excellent coolant but does have some, but a very low amount of silicates.
Zerex Asian from NAPA is your best bet.
Seems antifreeze has come down a few dollars since I bought some in the fall. Zerex G-05 was $15.94 at NAPA.

I replaced original oem blue with Peak Global Lifetime last summer with no ill affects. I need to do another drain and fill next month as all I did last year was pull the lower hose so there was still some original left in the block and now the reservoir looks dark green. But I wouldnt spend tons of money on coolant for a 12 year old car. Id worry more about the Trans on these things than anything else.

Japanese cars have phosphates as corrosion inhibitors, but no silicates. Only OEM and Zerex Asian are made this way.
