I change oil every 3000 miles, always have. Am I wasting money buying blends or full synthetic oils? Pennzoil conventional, Valvoline conventional, or Castrol GTX get me to 300k with no issues?

Conventional will do 5k with ease, and get your engine to 300k as well. Absolutly NO NEED to change modern oils at 3k any more.

You're wasting a TON of money using quality oils with the outdated 3K 'law'. ESPECIALLY a full syn. You can go with that to 10K.

Dang Dude? kinda harsh.

Not trying to be harsh. It's difficult to convey emotion or feeling while typing.

The OP's question is odd for someone who visits this forum, and has over 200 posts. I just wonder about the motive behind the question.

I see your point.

Yes and yes.

Everyone who changes their conventional oil at 3K has not been subject to a lobotomy.
For one, it is safe and will keep your engine clean better than any other technique.
Two, some driving and climate conditions require this or even more frequent OCIs.
Three, some engines are beat up or have a faulty design that would benefit from the 'old school' 3k changes.

Sure, engines and oils are getting much better in this respect -no doubt.
I agree that changing a full synthetic at 3k is bit early , if you are near anywhere normal conditions.

You sure can, driving around Pocono Lake but driving in Phil. I dont think so. A semi synthetic, like all the group three, would be better changed doing the very severe driving like at 4:30 on a raining Tue., in and around 7500 mi. ...

On a serious subject like oil and related subjects there is no room for candy behind treatment. This here website is hard core to the max!!!!!

Stick with what you're doing. Shell, Ashland, and BP appreciate your money.

A friend of mine spent the last two months in Europe where they refer to group three as semi synthetics. They do not go along with that ruling we did re. Castrol vs Mobil and the ruling, group three are real synthetics. They Europe, are sometimes behind,

but when it comes to this subject they are right on.

Old habits die hard as well as conventional wisdom. Some of us (including myself) need reassurance before we take the plunge.

I think you are confusing different terms. Group III in Germany is called "synthetic technology" while Group IV/V is called "fully synthetic". Other parts of Europe follow the US nomenclature nowadays.

Semi synthetic is something different altogether. It is a blend of mineral and synthetic oil bases, for example a mixture of Group II and Group III. It is the same concept worldwide. No different in Europe.

Oilchangeguy, you can do well with your shorter OCI, but you might want to try a longer one. Just keep an close watch on the oil level. I change my car's at 3000 - 3500 every time because if I go 4k it will burn a qt. That's 1/4 of the oil in the engine!

The truck does not have that issue so I run it longer.

i have one car that i do 3k changes on. my others get 5-7k. I change my sons saturn at 3 k because he drives it 2 miles to school and 2 miles home. Saturns are also hard on oil.
