Consumer Reports : Overpriced vehicles are ...

Yeah, a few tears ago a co-worker and her husband went to a local Mercedes dealer; they were ready to buy and let's just say price was not an object... Unfortunately they were ignored; I am not sure why. They went over to the Lexus dealer, were treated very well and wrote a check for a top of the line RX.
It never pays to prejudge your (potential) customers.

Many years ago a young friend was interested in trading in his car on a new Buick Riviera. He asked how much difference they would offer him. The sales guys laughed and laughed and wouldn't even look at his trade in. But they didn't think it was so funny when they saw him drive away in his Lamborghini Countach.

Turns out my friend was a Resident in Orthopedics and his dad was rich.

About 20 years ago we had a Toyota dealer say " they don't take Toylets for a trade in " . Toylet is Chevrolet Prizm ( Toyota Corolla ) .

What gets me are the number of people who are willing to pay these gouging prices. Where are people getting all this money that they can afford to do this, and why can't they realize if people would quit doing this, prices would go back down to normal levels...

Agree.

However-there is a lot of money moving around in the economy right now-that's what is fueling some purchases. Other-yes making a poor decision. But repros are on the rise as well.

Stopped by a Toyota dealer yesterday-the salesman said with a straight, sincere face that if you want a Tundra they are charging $2,500.00 over MSRP. Haven't looked at financing but I'm thinking the extra $2,500.00 probably doesn't add much to a 5 or 6 year auto payment loan.

I'm not buying anytime soon.

Wait until the book values drop ( 🕳️ ) and want to trade in a few years later . They'll be 😲 .

How many of theses sales are necessary, and who gets to decide that? some portion of the fleet is lost every day due to accidents, while another portion is uneconomical to repair. and in the rustbelt, again some are too rusty.

I agree with the sentiment, if no one bought then prices would drop. I’m just not sure what percentage is “frivolous“.

So I received the following email from an out-of-state BMW dealer:
My team has discovered an opportunity for you to drive home a pre-owned BMW. Trade in your 2014 BMW M235i Coupe and enjoy the updated benefits of a newer 2020 BMW 230i xDrive Coupe.
Call me crazy, but I don't consider giving up 72 hp and being saddled with AWD to be "benefits."
But that's just me.

It snows in Kentucky-sometimes pretty bad. It would seem AWD would be advantageous. Utah does a phenomenal job clearing the roads. But the side streets aret cleared after the main arteries. And of course the parking lots are private property.

When you need AWD you need it. But that's just me.

When it snows I usually take the Mini, which is fitted with Vredestein all-season winter rated tires. Worst case weather scenario, I take the Wrangler. If I didn’t have those options, I’d buy a dedicated set of winter tires/wheels and swap them over in late fall. I did that on my wife’s RWD card and she never had a moment’s trouble in winter weather.

But it might have that cool hole in the roof!

I drive a Subaru as my DD....so I do see a good AWD system as a benefit. :)
To each his own; RWD is my preferred drivetrain configuration for the cars I drive for enjoyment. Although I'll freely admit that I wouldn't kick an M5 Competition out of the garage.

Don't disagree there.....that's why I said DD (daily driver). I have three other RWD cars for fun. One, my HS car ('77 Cutlass), really isn't all that fun to drive though compared to the other two! LOL

My commuter car is a Clubman, not terribly exciting, but a pleasant enough drive- and it returns 40 mpg.
I wish I'd kept the 1974 Monte Carlo I owned in HS; it was a bit of a sleeper.

The mini is the one WITHOUT A SPARE TIRE RIGHT?

I was looking at a GR86. The dealer wanted $7,000 over sticker price. In a year they'll be lucky to get the MSRP.
