Probably not worth the trouble to save about twenty bucks. Anything against the WD Caviar Green? I am leaning towards this

This is in the computer currently. We don't really need the while 1.5TB and could live with 1TB *if* it will not cause problem during the restore.

What are your recommendations? I want to keep it under $100 if possible.


Get off the 7200.11 I believe those are known for issues. I lost a 500gb drive of the same model and learned it was known for issues.

Thanks! And how sure are you about being able to restore to 1TB using the already backed up using the built-in windows 7 tool?

Just looked into it and it appears as though the stupid Windows backup utility looks at partition size not space used (which is ridiculous) meaning that you DO need to go to as big or bigger with the replacement.

Which means this drive is probably your best choice:

Got the disk from Amazon and installed it.
- It was literally a bare drive with zero paperwork; not even a warranty card or receipt! I think I need to contact Amazon to figure out the warranty for this drive

- Windows Restore is really as stupid as we imagined. It restored the binary partitions from my old drive and thus leftover 500GB is un-allocated. The disk layout is


I don't think I could merge the un-allocated partition with C: as partition D; is in the middle. Should I just make another drive letter (e.g. Z:) for the left over and use it?

But at least Windows Restore was dead simple. I just kept on hitting next, next, next and let it do its thing. It even rebooted in to restored windows! It was truly un-attended after first few screens.
 
Just make it another drive partition/letter/use it.

alternatively just leave it alone and if you ever get close to running out of room there are some utilities that can fix the whole other partition in the middle issue.

Given that I have 1.28TB free on the C: I am going to heed your advice and just leave it alone. I will not be needing the extra room for a while.

See first if you can get it warranted. I could not as Seagate said it was an OEM drive and I had to go through Dell. Besides, the Seagate software to check the health of the drive gave it a clean report even while it was clicking :-(

Do take a full backup if you can, so that at least restore would be painless.

You should be able to shuffle the partitions using something like partition magic and subsequently extend C to utilize the free space if that's what you desire.

They'll provide a warranty and then you can RMA the drive to WDC. You can check the warranty period too @ WDC.
