Considering switching from Verizon to AT&T - Have some technical questions about the network and GSM phones.

According to this site, there are no towers in my area. I have 5g at my house and there is a large tower owned by AT&T very visible in my community. All the different companies use that tower and it has been there for decades. They say the site was just updated.???
Also, if you have wi-fi at your house, make sure you switch on "wi-fi calling" on your phones settings.

third-party owned but have ATT or VZW equipment on them.
That is how the industry works. When the zoning board etc. approves a permit to build a tower, they always require the owner to make space available to multiple companies. Most towers are owned by a real estate investor and the phone companies pay them rent. The companies bring their own antennas and equipment to mount on the tower.

As a member of our local planning commission, our local ordinances do require a new cell antenna (or any other antenna that we regulate) to offer co-location for a minimum of one additional user of the same type on the structure. Most cell towers that have been installed here offer locations for two users, with some offering three locations. Typically the builder / prime user gets the top location on the tower, and follow ons get the inferior ones.

We also require the applicants provide engineering studies demonstrating there is no suitable existing location within a mile radius to encourage co-location. In our community, that has resulted in one location with two cell towers within a few hundred feet of each other. The existing tower built for previous generations was not tall enough to support 5G operations in the co-located spot lower on the tower.

When cell towers were new, we had full houses for planning commission meetings opposing their location. The last ones we have done in recent years have had no public input - the public has generally decided the utility of the service is the more important factor.

There's no such thing as a GSM or CDMA phone anymore. Just have to make sure the phone you buy supports the 4g and 5g channels. iphones, pixels, samsungs, etc usually support every provider as long as it's not an international model.

Mostly correct but Verizon uses a different type of network not used in the rest of the world and why it is still regarded as being the outlier (I think) MMwave or CDMA (which technically is still their backbone)

"If you're a Verizon customer, don't even think about it. Those interested in buying an overseas phone should subscribe to T-Mobile or AT&T (or any MVNO that operates on those towers) for the best chances of compatibility."

I first ran into this when researching this phone
"International Model - No Warranty in US. USA ONLY COMPATIBLE WITH TMOBILE / MINT, TELLO GLOBAL VERSION . Does NOT Work With Verizon Sprint Boost Metro Pcs At&t Cricket. Unlocked Worldwide . - FCC ID:"

ATT was terrible for us . Switched to Verizon . I don't care about all of those acronyms , I just know our service is better now .

The towers listed could be third-party owned but have ATT or VZW equipment on them. FOr example American Tower is a big contractor to ATT, and so is Ericsonn. Crown Castle is also a big contractor to Verizon. When you look at the data Antenna Search provides you kind of have to read between the lines.

Well the tower has a sign on it "owned by AT&T". AT&T was the first and only company to install a tower system in WV. A former AT&T employee told me years ago that AT&T service in WV was the best to get because of this.
Also when I switched from Mint to Cricket, I was assured that Cricket subscribers have the same priority as AT&T subscribers.
