Considering Switching Back From ST To M1

Where do you get your ESP?

Do you consider ESP one of the best non-boutique motor oils?
I always get my ESP from Canadian Tire and always when it’s on sale (which is quite frequently actually). I think it’s the best off the shelf oil you can buy right now. I started using it back in 2018 in my Corvette and just recently switched my Civic over to it as well

But is there actually anything wrong with ST?
Not really. But as you mentioned it isn’t a particularly great deal these days given the price point of other offers. Throw in name brand rebates and ST offers only convenience and adequate performance when in a pinch or simply looking for a no frills solution on the cheap. So it’s basically got the sure thing barfly before last call status.

I haven't had a UOA done for a long time - I change oil and filter two or three times a year, averaging 5,000 to 10,000 km per change, depending on season and type of driving. All three engines are pretty durable.
Thanks! Good to hear.
Is the M1 ESP considered to be a superior oil due to its higher PAO content?
ESP is not a single base oil across all of them. Different grades get different base oils. The 0w-30 & 0w-40 Include a higher PAO/Ester blend as an example. While the 5w-30 does not. The ESP is darn good oil though but it's more $$ for you. :cautious:
Is it reasonable to assume the M1 AFE is not really an upgrade over the ST full synthetic?
Exactly, Between the two & especially if the ST is the same price or less I'd get the Super Tech Full synthetic all day long. Rebates can get to be a headache if they don't have one when you need oil.

Thanks, good information!

The main reason I was considering switching to M1 AFE was that it's available in 0W-30.

So, my revised plan is to check my stash of ST. I'll likely use any ST 0W-20 in the two vehicles (the Mazda5 and Kia Sedona) that don't usually get plugged in. I believe they both call for 5W-20.

I doubt either one is driven far enough in the winter for the oil to hit 100°C.

I'll use up the ST 5W-30 in the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan. It's parked in our attached garage in the winter, which seldom drops below -10°C.

Once the ST is used up, I'll look for M1 0W-30 ESP on sale, and try to use that as my "one oil to rule them all".

I have run AFE 0W-30 plenty of times in the past and currently have it in the Carnival for the winter OCI. We can get down to -20F and my vehicles are parked outside.

I know ESP is “better” in comparison but my thought is that for the cold temps and shorter trips, having a lighter 30 is better for the season. Oil temps will be lower and not getting pushed like in the summer with high ambient temps, AC on and longer travels.

Anywho, long story short, pick a 0W-30 and send it :)
