Confused over oil recomendation

THIS TYPE OF OIL SUPERSEDED TH EXISTING API SG,SH,OR SJ AN ENERGY CONSERVING II" AND IT ALSO SAYS " IF YOU CANNOT FIND ENGINE O"IL WITH THE API CERTIFICATION MARK, USE API GRADE SL ENERGY CONSERVING OIL. AN OIL WITHE A SINGLE DESIGNATION SL, OR IN COMBINATION WITH OTHER CATEGORIES (FOR EXAMPLE, SL/CF) MAY ALSO BE USED IF ONE WITHE THE API CERTIFICATION MARK CANNOT BE FOUND. AND ILSAC GRADE GF-III OIL CAN ALSO BE USED."

AFTER READING THIS I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO USE.
PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN PURCHASING OIL.

Any good name brand oil in the US will have this covered.

Hmmm, looks like Nissan has opened the door for people who like to use Amsoil. They prefer an API certified oil, but will allow you to use one that only meets API specs.

It sounds like the standard recommendation for most cars sold in the US. The ILSAC GF-4/3/2/1 spec says that the API "starburst" mark should be on the front of a bottle, while the donut should be on the back. The current starburst (GF-4) essentially means that it meets API SL and the "Energy Conserving" requirements for that viscosity.

I'm guessing they mean that if you can't find GF-4 (with the starburst), look for the API "donut" with an oil of the recommended viscosity meeting API SL.

If I'm not mistaken, SM oil's deadline was within the last month or so. SM oils are backward compatable with SL.
