I own an older Dell that I strictly use for internet. Use YouTube and Facebook. It has 256mb....Memory Type: DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200, DDR (non-ECC). Would I benefit from more memory?

You'd benefit from a new computer. It must be at least ten years old with that little RAM. A ten year old computer is like a fifty year old car.

Yes it would benefit but DDR RAM is expensive these days and it probably has a max supported amount of between 512 mb and 1024 mb, so you would be better off putting that RAM money towards a brand new (or refurb) $175 tower.

Of course i could recommend you a much better option than that if you told us you could afford it, but showing you how nice of a tower you can get for $175. That thing will smoke any old AMD/Intel 32 bit processor with its power saving Athlon II. Not to mention the giant leap in memory bandwidth and overall graphics power even with an onboard GPU.

How do you like the youtube? A relatively top end computer with a hefty graphics system (for its day) will tolerate video decompression better. A lousy all around computer should be put out to pasture and shot.

I can't remember

Sorry...geek joke but I just couldn't resist

To answer your direct question, "Do I need more memory?" unequivocally yes.

However, as others have said, the memory you describe is obsolete by about a decade, and with it the computer it is installed in. It's time for a new machine. However if you are looking for a stick or two of DDR, Tiger Direct is a good place to start.

Newegg and Fry's is worth a look too.

Dont bother putting any money into it, if its just for internet I would go with an inexpensive laptop. I just bought a new laptop from Walmart, its an HP 2000 model. Very basic but decent build quality. Has 4GB of RAM and 320MB of storage, and a basic AMD E-300 processor. Its the cheapest laptop I have ever bought, but one of my favorites. Purchased it for $355 which included the added on 2 year protection plan. My last laptop suffered an early death due to me rolling on it and cracking the screen.

Do you have any idea how much memory your motherboard can handle and in what configuration. For instance, up to 2gb 2 slots 1gb each, up to 4 gb, 4 slots up to 1gb each, 4 gb, 2 slots, up to 2 gb. Iam asking beacuse I have an old pc in the garage that i scrapped and reused the hard drive and DVD drive, but if she hasn't thrown it out, it had pc2700, I think 2 gb. I don't remember.

It's a Dell 4550 with a Intel Pentium 4 2.00 GHz processor. Will take 2GB memory. Has 1 empty slot. Has Windows XP.

I wouldn't say $28 for 2gigs is expensive. http://www.amazon.com/KOMPUTERBAY-400Mhz-PC3200-DESKTOP-MEMORY/dp/B003CH6ZR0/ref=pd_cp_pc_0

If you don't want a new computer, buying used ram is probably the best choice (ie. from members here for shipping only). I'd go for 1GB at the minimum.

Unless you purchase the same sized memory for the 2nd slot, it may not recognize the upgrade. That's what happened with my Dell. I needed to change both slots to match, simply because I wanted maximum amount.

Absolutely. 256MB with a modern browser will lead to an atrocious experience.

Cheaply source 2GB RAM, and an AGP card -- it'll be a vastly improved machine.

Is the current rig doing what you want it to? I can't imagine it does, but when we upgraded my Gramma's net TV to a Pentium-4, Windows XP rig (originally came with Windows 98)she was astounded by how fast it was. She didn't (read couldn't) stream anything above low-end video, but she was happy to do that, email people and surf.

I could have added more than the 1GB she had, but it would have been a waste. The rig was free, because it had a virus and the previous owner didn't want to pay to have it fixed. I wiped the drive and loaded a cheap copy of XP.

I would, if what the OP has is good enough. If it's not then a new rig with a cheap, efficient AMD APU (like the E-300 previously mentioned) or an Ivy Bridge i3 will do everything the OP needs for a couple of hundred bucks.

I purchased a little 11.7" ultra-portable with Windows 7 and an AMD E-350 APU for travel purposes only and it streams everything nicely at 720P without issue. An older i3 processor with integrated graphics (even an i3 from a few generations ago) will work very well, IMO.

For the OP, keep an eye on deal sites like dealnews.com, which will list best prices every day. Keep an eye out for a few weeks and you're bound to find something that meets your needs for a great price
