If you really think about it, you'd realize that it's not much of a leap from bike parts to fishing equipment. While they are different industries, many of the materials used in both are very similar. Shimano had a goal of promoting public health, and both bicycling and fishing fall within that goal. Shimano also owns a performance fabrics company, sports apparel company and makes rowing shoes.

It's way back when, but I do remember when Shimano was first making bicycling shoes (which generally have a stiff sole for more efficient power transfer) they touted the carbon fiber materials to make them both light and stiff. Their marketing materials also credited their experience with carbon fiber used in fishing reels as translating to this application.

And of course General Electric is a massive company where expertise in one product has led to developments in another. I've brought up that their expertise in steam turbines for power generation translated to their development of turbochargers, as well as jet engines and marine turbine engines. And the same diesel engines they make for locomotives are the basis for marine diesel engines.

I have heard that this is where they hope to catch up. If you look at the pure numbers, P&W is pretty close to GE, but that doesn't include CFM.

Hitachi keeps getting bigger and bigger. Their power tools are pretty good. Mitsubishi makes everything and is carving out a niche in the US HVAC Market especially with their split units.

Don't forget Honda. Cars, power equip, generators, motorcycles, outboard motors, lawn equipment, etc etc.
