I would ask also who has the shortest but I bet a few just roll over and is there. If it works out we'll be moving 95 miles from my job next spring. It's 6 miles now. I work 7 - 12 hours days every 2 weeks so it's not as bad. And I'll put a manual trans in the Festiva so 40+ mpg. Just temporary till I find a job closer. Wife thinks I'm crazy... but a almost free babysitter so the wife can work lots of positives! Any others on here with a long commute?

There's no way I could do that. I can barely stand my 33 mile each way commute. I don't really mind the driving (except for the afternoon traffic), it's just all the time I spend driving. Time I could spend doing other things. Like sleeping for another half hour.

Doubt that will be worth while.

Autos will get about the same as manual on the highway.

Doubt its worth your effort.

You must not drive for a living, lol. I couldn't drive that far for work. I have a 15 mile drive one way to work and that is far enough, since I drive all day for my job.

I wish you luck.
My normal commute is 25 miles each way, and the route I take is rural, pretty and light on traffic.
Twice each month I commute 100 miles each way.
Twice a month is kind of fun, especially coming home in the BMW with the top down in good weather.
Every day, though, would be another matter.
Still, if the move is worth it to you, and you think you can get a job closer to your new home in not too many months, why not?

This commute is doable. Even at 40 mpg, you are still looking at $20 a day in fuel costs (2.5 gals each way) or $100 a week, after tax.

When your days are 7 hours long, you can leave at 8 and come home by 7. On 12 hour work days, you are up for 16 hours. Ouch.

You are planning on spending a lot of time on the road in a good, but very old and jittery-riding short wheelbase car, with no airbags, no ABS, no traction control and no crush space.

Swapping in a manual seems like an extreme move too.

Good luck!

Define commute. If you mean a drive that is the same every day, I can't compete. But I drive in the sales game, so some days are 5 miles, others are 540.

When I first joined this board, I had just graduated from college. My work commute was 64 miles each way, for a 2 year period. My ex wife decided she needed to go to Cornell (mistake) and I would go up to Ithaca NY every 14 days or less. That came to be 48,000 miles per year. My commute now is about 10 miles.

The auto would be terrible on the highway look term. Runs higher rpms versus the 5spd. 35-36 versus 40+. I have everything so that wouldn't cost much. Actually pretty simple on these cars. But you are right my dad has 2 5spd might just trade him.

I agree no motorcycles... more so around KC.

Your right it would be around $22-25 every 1.5 days. The 12 hour days would be the killer then the 3 hour drive. Up here can't go to bed for 10p most nights due to the noise so in the end might actually get more sleep. The Festiva won't be a cadillac but the roads will be smooth. With the 12's I did agree but with the 13's not bad in comparison. They're turning highway 71 into a interstate. And I have aunt that lives up here if bad weather hits.

Your right I set at desks all day long. For some reason I prefer a long drive let's my mind settle I think.

Not alot of long commuters on here I'm surprised. Some sure do put alot of miles on though. I figure about 36k a year and I only plan on working another 20 years so 720k.. wonder if the $450 Festiva would last that long.

Besides the commute we wouldn't drive much. The wife would come up with me on Saturday, my short day, and do her shopping a plus. My parents have talked about giving us the home place and putting a modular home further back on the 20 acres. If that go through moving it's a done deal.. well according to the wife depends on the rent.

I drive 35 miles to work... in Atlanta traffic! I just got a new job and it's exactly 50 miles one way. The new job is 3 days a week, night weekend shift so I won't hit any rush hour traffic and I'll be driving 50 miles less per week.

That's another thing I forgot to mention. My hours are 6a-6p so I wouldn't hit rush hour either.
