Interesting article on ranking between a Navy Commodore / Navy Captain.

Article is a bit of a complex read. Prior to reading the article, further, I was under the impression that Commodore rank was granted only during wartime; recently I met two Commodores.

If you want to check into some Navy history- this article from 1939 may be of interest:

to use a Pop Culture reference that Helped me understand it, if we Follow the Career of Star Trek's Geordi La Forge, who as a LT. Commander was the Chief Engineer of the Enterprise-D (and E), when we saw him next in an episode of Voyager (in an Alternate Timeline, ...Gotta love Sci-Fi) He's the Captain of the USS Challenger. when we Meet up again in Season 3 of ST: Picard, he's a Commodore, and head Curator of the Starfleet Fleet museum. He's in Charge of the facility, and all the Ships on Display and in the care of the Museum. his Rank is above a Captain, but not quite an Admiral.
