You're at a 3-way stop in a residential neighborhood. It's 3:00 O'clock in the morning; it's dark out, and nobody is the there to see you because everyone is in inside their houses asleep. Do you come to a complete stop, or do you roll through the stop sign at about 2 miles per hour? I figure if I'm driving that slow; and I often do in my neighborhood; what's the point in stopping at a stop sign in the middle of the night?

The last time I did that, there was a cop sitting down the block in the dark, hoping I was drunk when he pulled me over. The joke was on him.

I only roll through signs & right turns on red when there's a lot of traffic, when it's harder to actually see me do it. Don't screw around when they're bored and looking for trouble. Screw around when they're too busy to worry about you.

I drive ~20 MPH in my neighborhood and keep pay great attention to my surroundings, looking for kids and other pedestrians...before I roll through every single stop sign. Each corner has great visibility, so stopping completely is a waste of time and gas.

You just want to hear the exhaust as you slip the clutch and engage 1st!

I do it very quietly. Part of the perks of a Borla catback is it is only loud when you want it to be, at WOT.

I always stop. With my luck there will be a fuzz hiding in the bushes ready to give me a ticket. And since I have a cdl I'm not elagable for traffic school and the fine will be doubled.

I don't think any of us here can give you the blessing to do what you want. Nobody can predict how ambitious the cop may be who is patrolling.

Unfortunately, Billy Buzzkill says the law doesn't change when the bars get out or you're on the last leg of a six hour drive with no one to see you. I had a friend that ran over a dog several years ago rolling through a stop sign late at night where that probably wouldn't have happened if he'd stopped.

When things like texting at 45 mph becomes the norm and stop signs are implied, then you open yourself up for problems whether it's 3AM or not. "Clear" could mean the cop with his lights off that "clearly" sees you a block down or the drunk with his lights off going 55MPH in a 25MPH zone that you might see the outline of if stopped but possibly wouldn't if you're preoccupied with the mechanics of rolling through the stop sign.

Considering that in addition to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff, and the California Highway Patrol, I now have the University of California Police Department patrolling my neighborhood I am not chancing anything.

There's a stop sign to pull out onto the main road by my house. I rarely stop. Only when there's oncoming traffic but if it's open, I just go.

I do. Not because it doe not make sense, but because if it gets into my habit, I will do it in the middle of the day when cop is around.
Now, people who stop at STOP sign and wait jogger that is 200ft away to cross street need to be put on electric chair, period!

I also believe there's a very large difference between someone who blows through a stop-sign and someone like me who travels less than the limit through the neighborhood and rolls through doing less than 5 MPH. The only stop-sign I stop at is at the bottom of my hill, because it's the only corner that doesn't have clear line of sight to the right due to bushes on the property. Every other one has very clear visibility to the left and right.

coming home, the first few stops are down-hill, so I typically roll through those signs and then coast up to only 10-15 MPH as I approach the bottom of the hill. I like to see the MPG meter go full green when I do this, and I feel save rolling through the stop-signs, since I'm approaching at such a low speed, giving me plenty of time to see half a block down, each way, before I release the brake.

Full stops are terrible for fuel economy. Any time there is a clear view in all directions at a stop sign I do a slight roll thru. Not high speed, but, keep the car rolling. Been driving a LONG time and never received a ticket for rolling a stop.

Heck, I don't stay stopped at stoplights in downtown STL at 3am when I'm on my way home from an after hours service call. Why they don't put their lights on red or yellow flash is beyond me.

I'm not sitting around waiting to get shot or car jacked.

When it's prime time for drunks and other pleasures on the roads, my rule is no blood, no foul.

I live right on the corner of an intersection. I walk my dogs early in the morning before work, around 5:30 when it's still totally dark out. Most people blow right through the stop sign around that time since they think it's dead and there's no one around. It's a pet peeve of mine, since it puts me and my dogs in danger. The sign says "STOP." It doesn't say "STOP....unless it's early in the morning and traffic is light." If you come upon a stop sign, freakin STOP!

Lots of people do the rolling stop, myself included on occasion. Cop will care nothing about your explanation as he writes your ticket if caught.
