Coldest day of the year here

nope, there should only be one 35C on the scale, and it's bad enough.

-35...you've got to be joking. I've seen a -11 and that was bad enough.

(Different note, we had 32mm of rain in under 15 mintues today...after the +35 temperatures...my carniverous plants weren't happy)

That's natural thermal cycling for 'ya

We had freezing rain in Houston today. First time since '97, I believe the weatherman said.

Snowed / Sleeted last two days. I just knocked an inch worth of ice off my car in the drive way.
Once I finish my coffee I am going into work.

We are at 30 degrees now. It got down to 25 in Dec, but it was dry cold. Icy roads and bridges are a whole lot worse that any amount of dry cold, especially in Central TX.

-21 celsius (-9 F), with wind chill -35 (-30 F). Can't wait to see how many cars are gonna need boosting this morning.

Our average low is -23C for January 17. No car should need boosting at that temperature!

My buddy was quite impressed that his Cummins started at -38C (actual temperature, not windchill) without any boosting or plugging in the other day. Not sure if he's using Esso 0W-40 or Chevron 5W-40 right now.

my 19 year old truck wasnt happy starting at -1F this morning... I guess it's the high volume oil pump and the 10w30.... 5w40 HDEO may be in it's future.

#@$%!, my stupid refrigerator ice maker water line partially froze in the attic last night, the pressure made the plastic pipe on the frig burst off, the ice got cleared out, and the thing kept trying to fill the tray but was spraying all over the back of the frig. Stupid below 0 temps for the last week. I'm getting sick of this #@$%!. PLEASE get here early spring!

It was so cold on the morning commute I had to roll the window up. It must have been 40 degrees F, I kid you not. I'm already wearing a flannel shirt. Next thing you know I'll have to go buy a jacket. I'm going to hold off a bit though. If global warming gets here soon enough I can save fifty bucks on not buying that jacket. With this cold spell I'm sure glad I'm using synthetic oil. Can't be to careful.

rpn, you shouldn't let your brass monkeys play outside in that weather.

Their balls might freeze off.

My ursine compadre, if you can tell me what brass monkeys are without looking it up, I'll give you kudos.

*stands holding hand in the air*

"pick me sir, pick me".

(must be something to do with being in the colonies).

BTW, making them out of #@$%! cast iron (maybe even getting them imported through the Marco Polo enterprises) would have made more sense than brass.

BTW, while on monkeys, I spent an interesting evening in November drinking beers and talking to a guy from Hartlepool.

Oops, wikipedia and Snopes say my convict memories are wrong.

At least wikipedia agrees with hertlepool residents.

Cast iron would have corroded more than brass when exposed to salty air.

Both, the origin of the term "brass monkey" and the expression "cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey," are nebulous. The cannon ball rack in a man-o'-war was allegedly made from brass, which in cold temperatures would contract and the cannon balls and shells would tumble on unfortunate sailors' toes. That's where the term comes from, but the origin seems to be based more on legend than in reality, since the cannon balls and shells in warships were held in wooden garlands and never in metal racks.
