Cold pour test

I haven't found a good cold pour video yet showing the same brand with all their viscosities ranging from 0w20 to something like 15w40. I know, cold pour is only relevant as far as the oil making it to the oil pump pickup, but still interesting to see how different viscosities behave at very low temps.

This has been posted here before but it's all good. Great video for those that haven't watched it before.

I wish this same guy would do other weights with the same brands.

Yeah, I was surprised The Motomaster conventional did ok

It says they are all 5W, why would you be surprised? Meeting the "W" rating is agnostic to the base stock.

I have some Quaker State Ultimate Durability in 5w20 and 5w30 and was planning on picking more QSUD prior to year end to use up my allotted MIR's. I might pick up a 0w30 and a 10w30, all in QSUD. I'm thinking of a -5F test temp and at that temp I'm predicting no difference. I can also do a 5w40 with some Mobil TD I have.

If we want to see differences, I' m thinking -30 F but then the Florida folks will complain it's not realistic. They can come up to High Level, Alberta with me this winter and I'll show them realism.

I wanna see a 10w30 conventional and SAE 30. Can you do this Snagglefoot?

It's relabeled Shell oil so it's excellent quality. I forget what the PDS is identical to at the moment.

By doing this test....he just made himself open to complaints.
1st....Not everyone uses these brands
2nd...Not everyone uses these grades
3rd....Not everyone sees those temps.

So if you wish he done this or done that different then maybe you ought to do your own test. Not hard.

Complaints aside, what the video shows is how those oils flow out of those funnels at that temperature. How the video correlates to the performance in an engine is not determined by this test.

The truth be known, the CCS, cold cranking simulater test has already dealt with this and the tables are constructed with the nearest threshold temp in deg C. Watching oil fall through a funnel is entertainment.

It's good enough for me.

Well that may be, but it's not good enough for me. I really don't care how the oil flows out of those funnels, I care about how it will perform in cold weather in regards to pumpability and cranking. That is what J300 addresses and results in the "W" rating which is printed on the front of those containers. My car doesn't have plastic funnels in it, it has an oil pickup and a pump.
